New Imagineering Carousel of Progress Permit Adds Longtime Scenic Contractor

Walt Disney Imagineering has filed another permit for Walt Disney’s Carousel of Progress, adding a sixth contractor to the reimagining project. Disney named Mecca Productions, Inc. for general construction, although the contractor specializes in set design. Five other permits for the project were filed back in June.

IN THIS ARTICLE:

  • The new permit scope the contractor enlisted for the work
  • How this filing fits with the five other permits filed in June

A Sixth Contractor Joins the Project

The new Notice of Commencement lists Mecca Productions, Inc. as the contractor. Disney’s paperwork lists the description of improvement simply as “general construction.” Walt Disney Imagineering is the owner of record, which points to theming work instead of structural work.

This filing joins five other Notices of Commencement permits Disney filed in June for the same address. We covered that broader batch of permits when they were posted. Those five named Southeastern Construction & Maintenance for general construction. Lo-Temp Engineering handled the HVAC install. Elite AV Systems took the electrical work. Icarus Exhibits and ThemeWorks split the set element installation between them.

All of these permits point to an expansive amount of work. It is likely that the Carousel of Progress will experience quite the overhaul in the months ahead.

Mecca Productions now joins Southeastern under a separate general construction filing, but it is likely that the work will be thematic in nature. Mecca has shown up across several recent Imagineering permits beyond this one. That includes work tied to theย Encanto ride planned for the upcoming Tropical Americas land at Animal Kingdom. Other recent work includes theย Haunted Mansion and theย Muppets Rock โ€˜nโ€™ Roller Coasterย at Disneyโ€™s Hollywood Studios.

Where This Fits in the Timeline

The Carousel of Progress closed for its reimagining on July 6th. That followed a final show and farewell coverage on July 5th. Crews installed construction walls at the entrance and exit overnight. We got a first look at those walls the day after closing.

Disney has said the reimagining will update every scene to new decades. The attraction is also going to be home to Walt Disney World’s first-ever Walt Disney Audio-Animatronic. Disney is targeting a 2027 reopening.
