Imagineering Files Permit for Muppets Retheming of Rock ‘n’ Roller Coaster

|

With the pre-show closed, Walt Disney Imagineering appears to be wasting no time in the retheming of Rock ‘n’ Roller Coaster at Disney’s Hollywood Studios. A recently filed permit shows that Walt Disney Imagineering is ready to move forward with the installation of set elements within the attraction building. Here’s the latest.

Imagineering Files Permit for Set Installation at Rock ‘n’ Roller Coaster

The new permit was filed by Walt Disney Imagineering, with Mecca Productions listed as the contractor. The scope of work is defined as “install set elements”, which means that themed set pieces will soon be installed in the building. The address resolves to the Rock ‘n’ Roller Coaster building, which includes both the queue area and the attraction.

If I had to guess, I would say that the work is related to the pre-show area, which quietly closed earlier this month. While the attraction remains open to guests, the pre-show area is now boarded up, which means that any Aerosmith visuals are now gone. Guests can still enjoy Aerosmith songs on the attraction through early March.

Here’s a look at previously released concept art for the reimagined pre-show. The pre-show will feature multiple Audio-Animatronics, including the penguins and Scooter. With your VIP passes, you’ll be welcomed inside the recording studio, where – wouldn’t you know it – you’ll find the Electric Mayhem are cranking out some seriously rocking tunes. Along with the finest audio engineers (all penguins, of course) we’ll see Scooter doing his best to convince Electric Mayhem to stop jamming and get to their increasingly restless fans. But will it be enough to get the band across town and onstage in time?

With the help from our friends at Muppet Labs and a very fast limousine, we’ll take a twisting, turning, and screamingly fun road trip across Hollywood to reach the concert in time. The iconic scenery and landmarks of Tinseltown will feature a Muppet twist when the attraction debuts in summer 2026.

From the sounds of it, there will be a light retheming of the actual attraction space. It sounds like most of the work will take place in the pre-show area, which is likely why it closed early.

Rock ‘n’ Roller Coaster starring Aerosmith will have its final day of operation on March 1, 2026. The Muppets takeover will open sometime during Summer 2026.
