Walt Disney Imagineering shared the news in a post marking Fitzgerald’s 47 years with the company. The post credited him with shaping “the experiences that define our parks,” citing Star Tours, Mickey’s PhilharMagic, Guardians of the Galaxy: Cosmic Rewind, and his work at Disneyland Paris.
Imagineering also pointed to his influence beyond the attractions themselves. His greatest contribution, the statement said, “may not be the attractions themselves, but the Imagineers and storytellers he made better along the way.” It closed with a direct message to Fitzgerald, thanking him for “47 years of magic.”

A Career That Started at the 1964 World’s Fair
Fitzgerald’s path to Imagineering traces back to childhood. Growing up in New York, he experienced the Disney-designed attractions at the 1964 to 1965 New York World’s Fair. That experience convinced him he wanted to be an Imagineer.
He worked in attractions at Walt Disney World Resort while in college. In 1979, he moved to California to join WED Enterprises, now known as Walt Disney Imagineering. There, he worked as a writer and producer on the EPCOT Center project. That early work set the tone for a career that would eventually touch hundreds of Disney park experiences worldwide.
Fitzgerald’s responsibilities grew steadily from there. In 1989, he became executive producer of Theme Park Productions. That division handled conceptual development, production, and post-production for all film and video presentations across Disney parks. He added another title in 2001, becoming executive vice president and senior creative executive for Walt Disney Imagineering. In that role, he was responsible for the creative direction of the Disneyland Resort and Disneyland Paris.
From Star Tours to Cosmic Rewind
Among his many credits, Fitzgerald was the original writer and producer for Star Tours. He continued in that role as creative director for Star Tours: The Adventures Continue through its many updates over the years. At Disneyland Paris, he led the Imagineering team behind the Ratatouille-themed attraction and restaurant. That project later expanded to EPCOT as well.
More recently, Fitzgerald directed Guardians of the Galaxy: Cosmic Rewind and Space 220 Restaurant at EPCOT. Both are among the more significant additions to that park in recent years. He also continued writing and directing new attractions up through his retirement, including “Walt Disney: A Magical Life.” That work ran alongside his broader portfolio responsibilities.
Overseeing More Than 400 Media Projects
Beyond his writing and directing credits, Fitzgerald held portfolio executive roles for Disneyland and Disneyland Paris. He also led Imagineering’s media production division for a stretch of his career. In that role, he oversaw the creation of more than 400 media projects for Disney parks worldwide. Those projects include Cinémagique, Soarin’ Around the World, Mickey’s PhilharMagic, Muppet*Vision 3D, and It’s Tough to Be a Bug!, among many others.
That body of work spans multiple Disney parks on multiple continents. It reflects the breadth of Fitzgerald’s role at Imagineering over the years. His retirement closes out a career that began before several of the parks he helped shape had even opened.
