An Inside Look at the Disney Cruise Line Dry Dock Process

Disney Cruise Line has shared a behind-the-scenes look at what happens during a ship’s dry dock. The Disney Wonder emerged from one a few weeks ago, Disney says, after more than 100 projects over 14 days. Updates also reached the Disney Fantasy and Disney Magic recently. Disney detailed what changed aboard each ship, from a Cars-inspired dining spot to new hull coatings.

A dry dock is a process in which Disney takes a cruise ship out of the water for renovations, updates, and routine inspections. Disney says each Disney Cruise Line ship typically gets one every five years, which lets the cruise line pair essential maintenance with enhancements to guest spaces. Shipboard teams, technical experts, Walt Disney Imagineers, and skilled craftsmen work together to finish the projects in a short timeframe.

Those numbers reveal an impressive pace and scope for the work. More than 100 projects in 14 days works out to more than seven projects a day on average, with nearly 1,000 people on the job.

Tracy Wilson, senior vice president and general manager, Disney Cruise Line Operations, said every enhancement starts with the same question: “How can we make the guest experience better?” Wilson added that the upgrades build on experiences guests already know while adding new touches. She also said innovation is not exclusive to new ships, and the cruise line continually evaluates and enhances each vessel. Nearly 90 percent of Disney Cruise Line guests rate their experience as excellent, which Disney frames as industry-leading guest satisfaction scores.

The Edge club for tweens got a refresh across the Disney Fantasy, Disney Magic, and Disney Wonder. It now has a vibrant new color scheme and modular elements that can adapt for a variety of activities. The Disney Magic and Disney Wonder also share a San Diego season during the Fall 2027 and Spring 2028 sailings now on sale. That gives guests on the West Coast a chance to sail the refreshed ships.

Not every improvement is visible to guests. Technical teams completed extensive efficiency work. That includes advanced hull coatings on the Disney Magic and Disney Wonder and a new bulbous bow on the Disney Fantasy. Disney says those changes improve performance, help minimize environmental impact, and support the cruise line’s environmental goals.

Crew spaces received attention too, including a reimagined crew dining location. Disney says the aim is to give crew members a space that supports them in delivering service to guests. Thousands of experts, from marine and technical teams to designers and Imagineers, work together on the project. They work around the clock to finish hundreds of tasks before a ship welcomes guests back on board.
