Disney Skyliner Remains Closed One Week After Malfunction That Stranded Guests for Hours

The Disney Skyliner gondola system remains closed today, a week after a malfunction stranded guests in the air for three hours. Guests at affected resorts are encouraged to use other modes of transportation.

At around 8pm on October 5th, the Disney Skyliner encountered what Disney has since described as a “malfunction” of the system that saw two gondolas crash at the Riviera Resort station. Disney says that there were no guests on board the two Disney Skyliner gondola cabins that were initially involved in the accident. Disney wouldn’t comment on whether guests were in any of the cabins that piled up in the station as they ran into the two crashed gondolas.

Here at BlogMickey.com, we provided on-the-ground reporting during the incident, providing photos of the Reedy Creek Fire Department performing an evacuation of one of the gondola cabins. Reedy Creek Fire Department union secretary Ryan O’Reilly said that the call for evacuation took up “all of the available manpower or most of the available manpower” at the Reedy Creek fire department and back-up assistance from the fire departments at Orange and Osceola counties.

Disney had initially provided a statement to BlogMickey.com stating that “there was no accident” and that the Disney Skyliner was experiencing “unexpected downtime”.

Of course, photos began surfacing online of the pileup of gondola cabins within the Riviera Resort station and we were able to obtain a photo of one of the two impacted gondolas that showed glass had shattered due to the crash.

Disney has closed the Disney Skyliner gondola system indefinitely as they investigate the cause of the “malfunction”. Disney has not provided any findings as to what caused the gondolas to crash, and it’s unclear if they will provide a statement in the future. The manufacturer of the Disney Skyliner gondola system, Doppelmayr, was spotted on site on the night of the incident.
