Disney Implements New “Backup Boarding Group” for Additional Rise of the Resistance Availability at Disney’s Hollywood Studios

Starting today, Disney has added support for “Backup Boarding Groups” for Star Wars: Rise of the Resistance. According to literature handed out to guests at Disney’s Hollywood Studios this morning, a backup boarding group opportunity may open up in the My Disney Experience app should Disney get through all initial boarding groups.

UPDATE: We’ve received further clarification on the Backup Boarding Groups here: https://blogmickey.com/2019/12/update-clarification-on-timing-of-backup-boarding-groups-for-rise-of-the-resistance-already-gone-for-today/

This opportunity would only present itself in the evening hours, closer to closing should all 100+ boarding groups get to ride. To be notified of a backup boarding group (if applicable), make sure you have push notifications enabled in the My Disney Experience app.

The presence of a backup boarding group doesn’t change anything in our Rise of the Resistance boarding group virtual queue guide because there’s no indicate that a backup boarding group will even be called this evening. Also, there is no guarantee that if you secure a backup boarding group that Disney will get to it. That said, if you’re visiting Disney’s Hollywood Studios this evening, it doesn’t hurt to keep an eye out!

    1. So basically, we’re sick of giving out free passes cause the ride keeps going down. Let’s only hand out 80 boarding groups and make the rest standby into the night? Think we all saw that coming.

    2. The whole system is a joke. Just as bad as when you had to get a paper fast pass at park opening and they were all gone in an hour of park opening. I cannot believe this is the best a bunch of Disney executives that make $$$$$ can come up with. It’s a joke. They keep changing park opening hours and people keep lining up earlier and earlier. Really this is the best you can do Disney, either line up at 4 am or come at park closing and hope to get in line.

      • It was a joke. I went there to see my kids faces while at Disney not be told I’m not getting on a ride because I didn’t sacrifice my childrens sleep. F that I’ll wait. It’ll be there next time I go

    3. I was there last week and tried to get on but couldn’t bring myself to getting up at 4 in the morning to take a taxi or uber to wait 3 hours for the park to open hoping to get in. It was so dumb. They could have just lined people up, so what if the wait was 4 hours at least you would have been online instead of oh you didn’t get here at midnight to sleep on the floor sorry you’re beat. I talked to a few people that did ride it and a lot of people that missed out. The misses out weighed the hits for sure. MGM was packed by 8 and empty by 845 because of that ride. I’ll eventually get to this ride but not at the expense of sanity and sleep.
And not for nothing but to get in the park you need a credit card looking ticket or a band. They could have easily used that and been like you can ride it once a day and having people scan your band or ticket. Shows up green, welcome to RotR shows up Red try again tomorrow.
