Splash Mountain Drained at Magic Kingdom After Unexpected Downtime

Splash Mountain has really had some reliability issues since the Walt Disney World theme parks reopened a few weeks ago.

Splash Mountain did not open at all today and it’s unclear what issues the attraction is facing or when it will be resolved. Today, the splashdown area after the drop into the Briar Patch has been drained, like during the January refurbishment in the photo below.

The Disney World website page for Splash Mountain doesn’t note any closures, but does remind guests that “an exciting new refresh is coming to this attraction”.

As you may know, Splash Mountain is going to be rethemed to Princess and the Frog. According to Disney:

We pick up this story after the final kiss, and join Princess Tiana and Louis on a musical adventure – featuring some of the powerful music from the film – as they prepare for their first-ever Mardi Gras performance.

Tiana is a modern, courageous, and empowered woman, who pursues her dreams and never loses sight of what’s really important. It’s a great story with a strong lead character, set against the backdrop of New Orleans and the Louisiana bayou. In 1966, Walt himself opened New Orleans Square when it became the first new “land” added to Disneyland park, so it feels natural to link the story and the incredible music of “The Princess and the Frog” to our parks.

    1. So Glad I got to ride the original SPLASH MOUNTAIN RIDE. It’s a shame it had to change!!

    2. Getting rid of one of the best ride themes in the park. What a shame. The lines were always long for this ride. People love it and the story it represents. Sad.
