Bob Iger Just Returned, But There Are Rumblings On Who Could Be The Next CEO of The Walt Disney Company

In a sweeping piece in the New York Times, the question of who will replace newly reappointed CEO Bob Iger was raised. The ink is now dry on Iger’s contract and the details call for a two-year term, ending on December 31, 2024. The mandate from the Board of Directors is clear – right the ship and “work closely with the Board in developing a successor to lead the Company” by the end of 2024. The next question is: who will Iger choose to be his successor this time?

Iger left The Walt Disney Company at the end of 2021 but handed over the reins to Chapek in early 2020. While many in the fan community are quick to blame Chapek for any number of grievances, some justified and others maybe not so much, one thing is often glossed over – Chapek doesn’t get the job without a stamp of approval from Iger. Iger would reportedly go on to call appointing Chapek one of his worst business decisions. Now, he gets a rare second chance.

In the NYT article, the question of who will succeed Iger produces two names – Disney Parks Chairman Josh D’Amaro and Disney General Entertainment Chairman Dana Walden. Both executives “could be groomed into chief executive material”, but were not quite ready yet, according to a NYT source.

Interestingly, two former executives were also considered to replace Chapek. Kevin Mayer and Thomas Staggs were reportedly approached with a hypothetical that involved one or both running Disney, but the condition to purchase their current venture, Candle Media, wouldn’t have been signed off by Chapek.

While the picture of Disney’s future CEO remains fuzzy, the clock is (once again) ticking.

    1. So Josh D’Amaro could be groomed to be the next CEO for Disney but I’m concerned. Chapek was all about control to milk as much money as possible from visitors any way he could. Enter the best way to control it all; The Reservation System.

Now here is why I’m worried, the reservation system is D’Amaro’s brain child, it’s his baby, he created it. So by having D’Amaro as CEO, wouldn’t that be more of the same thing?

    2. I wish I was considered and moles into a great CEO. I have worked for Disney for so many years and I believe in Walt Disney traditions they made this company a success and I also believe in changes that need to happen sometimes to help this company continue to be a success, but who am I?
