Florida Governor Ron DeSantis is, once again, increasing the pressure on Walt Disney World after the theme park giant outmaneuvered the Governor in securing multi-year agreements with the Reedy Creek Improvement District. DeSantis, who elected not to dismantle the district, instead opted for a rename of the district and electing his own hand-selected Board of Supervisors. DeSantis recently said that more action was planned against Disney and Reedy Creek, saying “you ain’t seen nothing yet“. Because the District remained intact, industry watchers say that any existing agreements remain valid.

Unfortunately for DeSantis, that means that previously signed agreements that give Disney development power through 2053 will remain valid, despite any activist moves from his hand-picked Board. Now, DeSantis has formally requested an investigation into “potential civil and criminal violations of the previous Reedy Creek Improvement District”.

The note from DeSantis’ office says that “all legislative options are back on the table” and that the investigation will be performed in consultation with the Florida Department of Law Enforcement. Of interest in the investigation will be RCID’s adherence to to applicable Florida civil and criminal laws and ethics. The investigation will also look into the previous Board’s qualifications as well as the involvement of Walt Disney World employees and agents.
