Disney World Quietly Suspends ‘Disney Movie Magic’ Projection Show at Disney’s Hollywood Studios

The Disney Movie Magic projection show has quietly been suspended at Disney’s Hollywood Studios. The show was comprised of various clips from the history of Disney movies and played as a projection show on the Chinese Theater ahead of the Wonderful World of Animation projection show. Showtimes were posted through the end of May, but the show hasn’t been presented yet in June. Here’s how Disney describes Disney Movie Magic:

    Disney Movie Magic

Fall in love all over again with unforgettable characters and cherished stories. After the sun sets, a compilation of favorites flickers across the iconic façade of Grauman’s Chinese Theatre at the park.

During this 10-minute treat you’ll enjoy memorable scenes from Indiana Jones and the Pirates of the Caribbean series, plus many more. Be swept away all over again!

Cast Members we spoke with weren’t sure of the exact reason Disney Movie Magic hasn’t been presented, but some speculated that it wasn’t dark enough to run the show that typically takes place just 15 minutes before the Wonderful World of Animation. If that’s the case, lighting conditions wouldn’t be acceptable until July 29th – unless Disney World extends the park hours for Hollywood Studios later in the day (unlikely). Disney has not formally given a reason for the suspension of Disney Movie Magic, and there are no showtimes now or in the future.

We stopped by Disney’s Hollywood Studios last night to confirm that Disney Movie Magic actually wasn’t playing and that it wasn’t a website error (as has happened before). Here’s a look at lighting conditions at 8:45pm, which is when Disney Movie Magic would’ve been shown, followed by an updated video of the Wonderful World of Animation projection show.

    Wonderful World of Animation

This excitement-packed projection show will take you on an incredible journey through more than 90 years of Disney and Pixar animation.

Watch in wonder as the façade of the Chinese Theatre is magically transformed—displaying this stirring tribute to animation. Behold spectacular sequences celebrating themes like magic, family, adventure, romance and friendship. Each theme is brought to life through unforgettable moments from beloved films—like Sleeping Beauty, The Incredibles, Coco and many more.

Of course, since we can never lose sight of the fact that it was all started with a mouse, the show fittingly begins and ends with the one-and-only Mickey.
