Republicans Walk Out on Vote to Advance Bill Repealing DeSantis’ Takeover of the Reedy Creek Improvement District

According to a report from the Orlando Sentinel, three Republicans walked out of an Orange County legislative session just before a vote on a proposed bill from Florida State Senator Linda Stewart that would undo Florida Governor Ron DeSantis’ takeover of the Reedy Creek Improvement District. The Republicans reportedly did not mention the bill when leaving after complaining about unrelated rules for the legislative meeting. As a result of their departure, the meeting did not have a quorum, causing the 7-0 vote to advance the bill to become invalid.

State Representative Anna Eskamani said that the move from the Republicans was disrespectful to the staffers and the more than 100 members of the public who showed up to speak at the meeting. Eskamani said that she suspects “this was less about delegation rules and more about Republican lawmakers not wanting to take a vote on restoring Reedy Creek.”

State Senator Stewart says that she won’t be swayed and will introduce the bill in a meeting next week. One of the Republicans who walked out, Senator Dennis Baxley, said his walkout had nothing to do with the proposed bill. You can read the text of the bill below.
