New Look for Cool Ship Kiosk at Magic Kingdom

Earlier this month, we speculated that there would be a new look for the Cool Ship kiosk when it returned to Tomorrowland. While visiting Magic Kingdom this morning, we took a ride on the Tomorrowland PeopleMover for an early look at the kiosk as construction in the area wraps up. Walt Disney World has not announced a reopening date for the Cool Ship yet, but the location will reopen sometime this year.

As you can see in the photos below, the kiosk is vastly different than the previous iteration. Gone are the hard metals, replaced by soft, curving lines. In fact, the kiosk is very reminiscent of the nearby Joffrey’s Coffee kiosk that debuted all the way back in 2017. Here’s a look at that kiosk before we take a closer look at the new look Cool Ship kiosk.

And here’s a quick look at the old look for the Cool Ship kiosk. The snack kiosk previously had two structures. The “Cool Scanner” included a red ship on top, and misting spray during hot days for a quick cool down. Next to the ship was the snack kiosk, which had a number of different menu items over the years, including sushi! More recently, the venue had a less inspired lineup of popcorn, ice cream novelties, and soda.

And here’s a look at the new Cool Ship kiosk. The new kiosk has a Mid-Century Modern feel to it, complete with swooping lines that drive through the roofline to connect either side of the kiosk.

To me, the new Cool Ship kiosk is reminiscent of the Theme Building at Los Angeles International Airport. Completed in 1961, the Theme Building features a UFO-like restaurant suspended from the center of two massive crossed arches of stucco-covered steel. It’s an example of a Mid-Century Modern design for the Space Age – exactly what the new version of Tomorrowland appears to be attempting.
