Second Construction Project Now Underway in Star Wars: Galaxy’s Edge

|

While visiting Disney’s Hollywood Studios recently, we noticed that there is a new construction project underway in Star Wars: Galaxy’s Edge, the second in the Star Wars-themed land at the moment. Back in early August, we took a look at a construction project underway near the entrance/exit to Toy Story Land on the northwest end of Galaxy’s Edge. Shortly after we checked in on the project, land clearing began in the area. While we don’t have a substantive update on that project, a new project has popped up near Savi’s Workshop in the heart of Black Spire Outpost. Here’s a closer look!

Construction at Savi’s Workshop in Star Wars: Galaxy’s Edge

A large area around Savi’s Workshop is now surrounded by construction walls. The immersive lightsaber building experience remains open during the work. As a quick aside, Savi’s Workshop remains one of my favorite experiences in Star Wars: Galaxy’s Edge due to how immersive the experience is. At its best, it is as close as Disney got to fulfilling the promise of a live-your-own-story experience outside of the unbelievably immersive Galactic Starcruiser immersive theater hotel.

That said, Savi’s appears to be struggling to draw guests at the moment. Reservations are basically wide open on the Walt Disney World website. This is despite an April 2023 refresh of lightsaber building options. Perhaps it’s time for another refresh, or perhaps, the $250 price tag is just too steep. Either way, I think Savi’s Workshop is an amazing experience. Back to the construction update.

First, here’s a look at the courtyard from a file photo from 2020. This is back when physical distancing was in place, but the area looked the same in recent years.

As you can see in the photos below, construction walls surround a good portion of the Savi’s Workshop courtyard and associated planters. We’ll have a peek into the construction site in a minute, but for now, here’s a look at how much room is taken up by the walls.

  1. Hopefully they’re going to plant a nice big shade tree to lower the temperature a couple of degrees in the concrete wonderland called Galaxy’s Edge. And yes, 250 bucks for a light saber is WAY too much. I was very happy to get me a The Empire Strikes Back ice cream machine from Cloud City the last time I was there. It was actually reasonably priced too!

  2. The quality of the saber parts is the issue for me. The sensitivity of the movement sensor is terrible and laggy. The blade lighting is sub par compared to neopixel blades. If they improved the electrics I would build one every time I visit.
