Provolone, Olive Salad, and Spicy Aรฏoli

The Muffuletta Burger can be found at Sassagoula Floatworks and Food Factory, right off the main lobby of the resort. Port Orleans is a wonderfully themed resort, split into the French Quarter and Riverside sections. Sassagoula Floatworks and Food Factory is in the French Quarter section, themed after the iconic neighborhood in New Orleans.

While a traditional muffuletta is a New Orleans sandwich built on a round sesame loaf with Italian meats, cheese, and olive salad, this burger riffs on that concept.

SASSGOULA FLOATWORKS & FOOD FACTORY

Years ago, the Sassagoula Floatworks and Food Factory quick-service venue was stripped of detailed theming. Now, it’s a bit of a sad warehouse, with little bits of theming and props here and there. While the French Quarter has plenty of rich theming, I don’t think anyone is going to Sassagoula for the theming.

In terms of logistics, you can either Mobile Order or go up to various windows with different offerings. You will get your plate of food at the service window area and then pay at the registers nearby. From there, you can either sit down and eat like a normal person or parade your burger around the courtyard area for photos with fiberglass gators and whatnot.

FIRST IMPRESSIONS

Here’s a look at the presentation for a “here” order. You can also order “to-go” and get your meal in a standard to-go box. The burger comes standard with french fries, or you can upgrade to Black Garlic, Truffle, and Parmesan Fries for $2.00 more. We opted for the standard variety.

HOW IT TASTES

We’ll caveat our experience by saying that this is a new offering. It is so new, in fact, that the Cast Member who made our Muffuletta Burger was still following a laminated sheet to assemble the various items. That said, the burger came out correctly based on the description, although we’ll call out some room for improvement when it comes to portions.

The first thing we noticed was the delicious and soft bun. This is a special bun not found on any of the other burgers at Sassagoula Floatworks and Food Factory. Just like most of the Muffuletta Burger, we’re talking about a spin on the muffuletta – not a like-for-like recreation. To that end, this is a spin on a sesame bun. It’s delicious. The bun was soft, and the dough flavor was exceptional compared to a standard burger bun.

Opening up the burger, we can see that some of the Olive Salad and Spicy Aรฏoli not only stuck to the bun, but started to soak into the bun. We can actually use the photo below ot illustrate our only wish – more olive salad and spicy aioli. I was hoping the burger would be dripping with the toppings, but it was disappointingly well contained.

That said, the olive salad was wonderful, with a tangy zip thanks to different styles of olives. I found the spicy aioli took a back seat to the olive salad flavors.

That said, the flavor profile was a bit muted due to the burger. While I thought that the burger mixture was great, there simply wasn’t enough of the olive salad to balance the scales. My only wish for my burger was more olive salad to tip the scales and flavor profile in the direction of a more traditional muffuletta.

IS THE MUFFULETTA BURGER WORTH IT?

At $14.69, it’s certainly not the most expensive burger we’ve had at Walt Disney World. If there were to be more of the olive salad, I think it would be something that we’d return to Port Orleans to enjoy again outside of this review. If you’re already at Port Orleans for your vacation or stopping by to visit, I’d say that the Muffuletta Burger is a compelling offering in the Sassagoula Floatworks lineup.

For guests who are looking for something more traditional, the Gumbo and Jambalaya remain good choices. That said, if you’re looking for a spin on a classic, we can recommend the Muffuletta Burger.
