NEW: Solar-Powered Trash Cans Rolling Out to All Walt Disney World Theme Parks, Water Parks, and More

BlogMickey.com has learned that Walt Disney World plans to expand its solar-powered trash cans far beyond EPCOT. The smart cans and recycling bins are heading to all four theme parks, both water parks, and Disney Springs, with the rollout stretching through the rest of the year. This follows the EPCOT World Showcase rollout we reported on, which itself grew out of a lengthy pilot at the Germany Pavilion. That pilot delivered exactly what Disney hoped for, clearing the way for a resort-wide push. Walt Disney Imagineering is also involved in the design work, and that detail tells us a lot about how seriously Disney is taking the theming.

Solar-Powered Trash Cans: Beyond EPCOT, and beyond the theme parks

Earlier today, we reported that the solar-powered cans had begun to spread across EPCOT’s World Showcase, pushing past the Germany Pavilion that served as the testbed since 2024. Now we have learned the plan goes much further. We have learned that Disney intends to bring the solar-powered trash cans and recycling bins to all four theme parks, both water parks, and Disney Springs.

We also have a rough idea of the rollout sequence. The cans will keep rolling out across World Showcase in the coming weeks, followed by a wider push into the rest of EPCOT and then the other theme parks through the rest of the year. Exact dates remain unclear, but work is well underway.

Why the pilot worked

The expansion follows a pilot that gathered Cast Member feedback, and we understand that feedback was positive. The smart cans alert the custodial team when a unit needs emptying, so Cast Members no longer walk the park checking each can by hand. That shift made trash collection more efficient.

It also changed the job in a way Cast Members welcomed. Freed from constant can-to-can rounds, custodial Cast Members spent more time interacting with guests.

Imagineering steps in on the theming

Here’s the detail that caught our attention. Walt Disney World is bringing in Walt Disney Imagineering to design the new cans. The current lineup carries park and land theming, including the iconic World Showcase pavilion medallions. Disney World will continue to work with Imagineering to ensure that the new cans closely resemble the current lineup of trash cans. Imagineering’s involvement signals that Disney wants the solar cans to hold that same theming as they spread to every corner of the resort.

That matters most outside EPCOT, where the cans will land in heavily themed spaces like Galaxy’s Edge, Pandora, and Disney Springs. A generic gray compactor would stand out. Bringing in Imagineering suggests Disney will ensure that future trash cans retain the rich theming that guests expect.
