Themed solar trash cans have started appearing in Toy Story Land at Disney’s Hollywood Studios. The blue, green, and yellow cans can be found around most of the land, with handwritten-style lettering that matches the land’s toy box look. Most of Disney’s Hollywood Studios still has plain grey cans, though Hollywood Boulevard and Animation Courtyard have themed designs of their own. We photographed all four looks.

Disney’s solar-powered smart trash cans have been spreading across Walt Disney World since the cans rolled out around EPCOT in June. Toy Story Land now has a design of its own. The arrival of themed cans in Toy Story Land gives Hollywood Studios at least four different can designs in use, counting the plain grey ones.
The Toy Story Land cans pair a green top with a blue body, and a large yellow triangle cuts across each one. White, handwritten-style lettering spells out WASTE and RECYCLE, as if a kid labeled the cans with a crayon. The Slinky Dog Dash sign nearby uses the same notebook paper and crayon look, so the cans fit right into the scene.
We found a pair of cans beside the Slinky Dog Dash standby entrance, next to the stroller parking area. That said, they can be found around most of the land. Like the other solar cans, each one has a black opening marked with an icon and a foot pedal at the base.
Toy Story Land’s old cans were boxy metal bins with rounded green tops and visible rivets along the seams. They had similar color and design to the new solar trash cans. We photographed the pair near Alien Swirling Saucers a couple of weeks ago.
The new cans keep the green, blue, and yellow palette and the diagonal color split, so the update feels like a refresh of the same look. They swap the round opening for a black mailbox-style slot with an icon and add a foot pedal. Large handwritten-style lettering replaces the small printed RECYCLE label. The smooth panels and black trim also replace the riveted metal look.
How Toy Story Land Compares to the Rest of Hollywood Studios
Plain silver-grey cans with black trim are still the most common sight at Hollywood Studios. Their only markings are TRASH and RECYCLE labels beside matching icons.
Hollywood Boulevard has its own themed look. Those cans are olive green with orange icons and labels. Each one also carries a round medallion that reads “Please Help Keep Our City Clean.” The Chinese Theater facade sits at its center, like the old bins.
Animation Courtyard has cream-colored cans with dark green outlined labels that read WASTE PLEASE and RECYCLE PLEASE. Each design takes a cue from its surroundings, and Toy Story Land’s is the most colorful of the four.
Where the Solar Trash Can Rollout Stands at Walt Disney World
Disney says the cans compact waste automatically and hold more than the units they replace. They run on solar power, with a battery and/or plug-in backup. Sensors also alert custodial Cast Members when a can needs emptying, which Disney frames as giving them more time for other parts of the job.
In June, Disney confirmed plans to bring the cans to all four theme parks, both water parks, and Disney Springs. Themed cans have since arrived in EPCOT’s World Discovery and at Test Track. More have appeared in the Asia section of Animal Kingdom.
We’ve recently confirmed that plans remain to roll out the solar trash cans to the previously announced areas.
