Solar Trash Cans Debut at Animal Kingdom With Tree of Life Theming

New solar-powered smart trash cans have debuted at Disney’s Animal Kingdom. We found the new cans in the entrance plaza and throughout The Oasis. Each unit carries a simple Tree of Life decal on its side. That’s already more theming than Magic Kingdom got when its own solar cans debuted unthemed earlier this month. Here’s a look at what we found, and what we’re keeping an eye on as the rollout progresses.

Animal Kingdom Is The Latest Disney World Theme Park for Solar Trash Can Rollout

IN THIS ARTICLE:

  • Where we found the new solar-powered smart trash cans so far
  • How the Tree of Life decal compares to the old cans in the same spot
  • Why we’re keeping an eye on the rollout as it approaches Discovery Island

Tree of Life Decal Added to Animal Kingdom Trash Cans

The new cans pair a solar-powered trash compactor with a matching recycling bin. It’s the same setup EPCOT guests have seen since the rollout began. Each unit carries a gold Tree of Life silhouette on its side panel.

The decal gives these units more theming than Magic Kingdom’s debut cans, which arrived in plain, unthemed housing. Previously, the cans stationed in The Oasis carried no park-specific branding at all. They were a plain green finish with a printed recycling symbol, nothing more.

The new solar units replace that plain look with the added Tree of Life touch. That theming still stops at a single decal. It hasn’t yet expanded into a fuller design treatment the way EPCOT’s pavilion-specific units have. More on that in a bit.

Discovery Island Sets a Higher Bar

Elsewhere in the park, Discovery Island’s existing trash cans already carry a much more detailed Tree of Life graphic. That version includes dozens of individual animal silhouettes woven into the branches and roots. It’s a richer design than the simple gold silhouette on the new solar units.

Those Discovery Island cans haven’t been converted to the solar style yet. We’ll be watching closely when they are. The detailed version sets a design bar the simpler decal doesn’t currently match. Hopefully, Walt Disney Imagineering has plenty of detailed decals to apply to the Discovery Island solar trash cans when they arrive. Otherwise, it’ll be an objective theming downgrade.

Where the New Cans Have Been Spotted

So far, we’ve found the new solar-powered cans in the entrance plaza just past the turnstiles. They’re also scattered throughout The Oasis. We haven’t yet walked the rest of the park to confirm how far the rollout extends beyond those two areas, but we’ll be doing that later today.

Disney has previously said Walt Disney Imagineering is helping design the cans as they expand beyond EPCOT. The Tree of Life decal suggests that effort is already showing up at Animal Kingdom.
