Star Spangled Solar: New Themed Trash Cans Arrive in The American Adventure at EPCOT

New solar-powered trash and recycling cans have arrived at EPCOT’s American Adventure pavilion. The new cans keep the flag crest design found on the old units. In fact, the new bins expand the design in a way the old cans didn’t. Head out to EPCOT with us this morning to take a closer look at the new solar-powered trash cans in The American Adventure.

  • New solar-powered trash and recycling cans have replaced the old design at American Adventure
  • The new cans extend the pavilion’s flag crest artwork to the recycling bin for the first time
  • The rollout continues a broader push already seen across World Showcase and Walt Disney World

New Solar Cans in American Adventure

The new solar trash cans have replaced the previous trash and recycling bins stationed around the American Adventure pavilion. We found them scattered throughout the pavilion, and along the walkway around World Showcase Lagoon. Each unit pairs a solar-powered trash bin with a matching recycling bin, both capable of compaction. It’s the same setup we documented at the France Pavilion and elsewhere around World Showcase.

A solar panel sits beneath the clear lid on top of each can. It keeps an internal battery charged so the compactor keeps running even on a cloudy day. Guests can open either bin two ways. They can pull the recessed handle above a labeled “TRASH” or “RECYCLE” mailbox-style slot. Or they can step on the foot pedal below it for hands-free disposal. The same sensor technology found elsewhere alerts custodial Cast Members once a bin fills up. Here’s a look at the new solar trash cans and their designs.

Comparing the Old and New Designs

The old cans at American Adventure carried a red, white, and blue crest. It featured three stars, stripes, and “76” set inside a shield, an emblem tied to 1776. That crest appeared only on the trash side of the old two-bin setup. The recycling bin next to it carried a plain red recycle icon and the word “RECYCLE” instead. There was no crest artwork on it at all.

The new cans change that. Both the trash and recycling units now carry the full flag crest. That gives the recycling bin the same themed treatment the trash can has always had. It’s a small change, but similar to how Disney has approached the standard World Showcase bins too.

The new cans do trade away a couple of details from the old design in the process. Those old bins had a rounded, low profile with a flat top and a simple circular drop-in hole for recycling. New units stand slightly taller with a boxier body and a curved solar-paneled lid. Functionally, the swap brings the same benefits we have covered elsewhere in World Showcase. That means greater compaction capacity, solar charging, and fewer manual checks for Cast Members.
