REVIEW: NEW Spicy Pork Steamed Pods at Satuli Canteen

Kaltxi! Welcome to Satuli Canteen in Pandora – The World of Avatar, where a new pod has entered the mix. Ever since Pandora opened to guests back in 2017, there has been a menu item that has intrigued and confused: the cheeseburger steamed pod. We like it, but it can be a bit controversial. After returning to the menu in 2020, the cheeseburger pod has been a staple. Now, there’s a new version of steamed pod at Satuli Canteen. Here’s our review of the NEW Spicy Pork Steamed Pods at Satuli Canteen!

NEW Spicy Pork Steamed Pods at Satuli Canteen in Pandora – The World of Avatar

SPICY PORK STEAMED “PODS” | $14.29

Mongolian-style pork “pod” stuffed with pork, bamboo shoots, bell peppers, scallions, and a chili-garlic paste, served with crunchy vegetable slaw and vegetable chips.

Before we even get our first bite, we can see that these Spicy Pork Steamed Pods have a unique, black color. Contrast that with the light brown “bun”-style look of the cheeseburger pods, and we already have a clear contrast. Honestly, the black bun is an interesting choice. At times, it reflected some light and almost looked like a leathery bat wing. Don’t let that scare you off, though; the consistency is the same as the cheeseburger variant. Where we start to see some departure is in the ingredients inside.

Inside, Disney says we’ll find a Mongolian-style pork “pod” stuffed with pork, bamboo shoots, bell peppers, scallions, and a chili-garlic paste. A slice down the middle of the pod reveals the ingredients inside.

I’ll be honest. This isn’t working for me. I wanted to love it, but I don’t. While the ingredient mix sounds excellent, we really can’t get much flavor beyond the “mush” of the pod. For the cheeseburger pod, that works. Here, it doesn’t. In fact, I was so disappointed with the flavor during a normal bite, that I had a suspicion it was the bun itself that was throwing me off. So, equipped with my surgical butter knife, I opened the pod up to try the ingredients inside, alone. What I found was a complete 180 from the bun-and-all bite.

Inside, the pork, bamboo shoots, bell peppers, scallions, and a chili-garlic paste combined for a wonderful flavor. If this were served in a bowl, it would be one of my go-to items in an already stacked menu lineup at Satuli Canteen. I couldn’t tell if it was the coloring or just the bao bun flavor itself, but all of the wonderful flavors inside are neutered by the bun in a way that isn’t present with the cheeseburger version.

As it stands, I can’t recommend the new Spicy Pork Steamed Pods at Satuli Canteen, but I’m hopeful that the kitchen can make some adjustments to let the ingredients shine, somehow. For now, stick with the cheeseburger steamed pods, or try one of the delicious bowls that have been on the menu for a while.
