He has sent a farewell message to Central Florida community members and shared a separate reflection on his 36-year Disney career on Instagram. Walt Disney Imagineering’s Michael Hundgen also posted a tribute to Vahle. Vahle announced his retirement in May after 36 years with Disney, and Joe Schott takes over the role next week.

Vahle’s Farewell Message to Central Florida
Earlier today, Disney shared a farewell message from Jeff Vahle, addressed to the Central Florida community. In the message, Vahle thanked them for their support and described Walt Disney World and Central Florida as partners in building a strong community. Working alongside community members while celebrating accomplishments, marking milestones, and navigating important local issues has been a privilege, he said.
Vahle wrote that he has seen firsthand the positive difference the community makes every day. He called himself a lifelong resident of Central Florida and said the region’s future is bright because of the work of the community. Vahle closed by thanking the community for its partnership and commitment. Together, he said, they have helped make Central Florida an incredible place to call home.

Community friends,
As I begin my retirement, I want to thank you for your support over the years. Walt Disney World and Central Florida go hand in hand, and I feel we have truly been partners in building a strong community.
Having the opportunity to work alongside so many of you as we celebrated accomplishments, marked important milestones and navigated the issues that matter most to our community has been a real privilege. As a lifelong resident of Central Florida, I have seen firsthand the positive difference you make every day. Our future is bright because of you.
You are in great hands with Joe Schott, who will begin leading Walt Disney World next week. Joe was raised right here in Orlando and understands just how special the relationship between our company and the community is.
While I may be retiring, I look forward to continuing to support the community that means so much to me and my family through board service and other opportunities.
Thank you for your partnership and commitment. Together, we have helped make Central Florida an incredible place to call home, and I know the very best is still ahead.
Vahle Reflects on His 36-Year Disney Career
Vahle also posted a separate reflection on Instagram, looking back on his career beyond his ties to Central Florida. He described opening Disney’s Animal Kingdom, helping build Shanghai Disney Resort, and supporting new growth for Disney Cruise Line as career highlights, alongside planning for Walt Disney World’s future. Vahle called it the best job in the world.
Vahle wrote that the people and memories mattered more to him than the milestones themselves, naming Cast Members, guests, and Central Florida community members as what he will remember most. He described leading Walt Disney World as a privilege and an honor.

On my final day as Walt Disney World president, I am reflecting on what a journey the past 36 years have been. I have been fortunate to work around the world and help bring new projects and parks to life, from opening Disney’s Animal Kingdom to helping build Shanghai Disney Resort, supporting new growth for Disney Cruise Line and planning an exciting future for Walt Disney World. It truly has been the best job in the world.
Beyond those milestones, what I will remember most are the people and the memories we created together, the Cast Members, Guests and Central Florida community members who made every day so special. It has been a privilege and an honor to lead Walt Disney World, and I will carry this place and these memories with me always.
Imagineering Leader Shares Tribute to Vahle
Michael Hundgen, Vice President of Creative for the Walt Disney World Portfolio at Walt Disney Imagineering, posted his own tribute to Vahle on LinkedIn. Hundgen credited Vahle’s 36-year career for shaping aspects of Disney’s experiences business around the globe. He pointed to Vahle’s role as an enabler of Imagineering’s project lineup during his time as Walt Disney World president. That lineup includes projects recently opened, currently under construction, and still in development.

Joe Schott Takes the Reins Next Week
Vahle used his farewell message to the community to formally hand off the reins to Joe Schott. He told the community they are in great hands with the incoming president. Schott was raised in Orlando, Vahle noted, and understands the relationship between the company and the community. Vahle framed the point as reassurance that the partnership will continue under new leadership.
Schott’s Disney Experiences bio lists an effective start date of August 3rd. That puts his first day just a few days after Vahle’s last.
Vahle said he plans to stay connected to the Central Florida community he and his family call home even in retirement. He pointed to board service and other opportunities rather than stepping away from the region entirely. He said only that he looks forward to continuing that involvement.

On one hand, I feel like these high profile jobs at Disney are less about actual control and more about being the designated whipping boy. Everybody blames Chapek for everything, but all of that was on the agenda before he walked into the room. His job was to take the fall for things that were, for the most part, never reversed and in most cases, made worse after he was gone.
But on the other, it’s hard to look past the sudden surge in anti-guest changes coming in at WDW right as the guard is changing. A cruise ship guy gets the overseer job and suddenly there is an obsession with resort exclusivity (and therefore, transportation restrictions)? I can’t write that off.
It may come to pass that Vahle was the devil we knew. What I can say for certain is that the board will never allow the most damaging policies, like selling line cut passes and the IP mandate, to be changed.
