Mayor Winddancer Comes to Animal Kingdom
Walt Disney Imagineering announced the addition of Mayor Winddancer to the Zoogether Day celebrations inside Zootopia: Better Zoogether. Winddancer is the horse mayor of Zootopia introduced in Zootopia 2. He now appears as part of a brand new pre-show sequence at the attraction.
Imagineers said Winddancer’s popularity in Zootopia 2 was a major reason he was chosen for the update. He was such a big part of the film that the team wanted to bring him into the show. That meant working again with Patrick Warburton. It also meant teaming back up with Zootopia 2 filmmakers and animators at Walt Disney Animation Studios. The goal was to make sure the character welcomes guests and sets up the story of the show properly.
Behind the Scenes of the New Pre-Show Sequence
Imagineering revealed the update through a behind-the-scenes video. The footage took viewers inside the Tree of Life Theater during one of the final rehearsal nights before the changes went live for guests. Show teams from every department were on hand for the run-through. That included audio, lighting, special effects, and even the figure animation team responsible for the theater’s Audio-Animatronics. Their job was to confirm the new sequence worked correctly and that the timing lined up.
During the rehearsal, a video showed Mayor Winddancer welcoming guests to a special day of celebration. The moment invited everyone to remember a shared connection, closing with a reprise of the show’s message that the animals of Zootopia are better together. Afterward, Imagineers described the show as sounding and looking great. They said the goal behind the update was simple: add a little extra magic and enhance the guest experience whenever the opportunity comes up.
Zootopia: Better Zoogether opened at Disney’s Animal Kingdom on November 7th. It replaced It’s Tough to be a Bug inside the Tree of Life Theater. The show already features other new and returning Zootopia characters, including Officer Judy Hopps, Nick Wilde, and Heidi Howler. Mayor Winddancer’s addition expands that lineup.
