Sugar Rush: Sweet Rescue
Disney has confirmed “Sugar Rush: Sweet Rescue” as the name of the attraction replacing Buzz Lightyear’s Astro Blasters. It opens in spring 2027 as the first Wreck-It Ralph attraction at any Disney theme park.
Guests enter the candy-themed racing game Sugar Rush. They team up with Ralph and Vanellope to save the game world from Sugar Bugs, glitches created by the villain King Candy. The goal is to restore the Sugar Bugs to their original “kawaii” forms. Disney’s press release describes those forms as gummy candies, cupcakes, and other confectionery. Disney says the attraction introduces new technology to Tokyo Disney Resort for an interactive storytelling experience, calling it a first for a Disney theme park.
Two new venues are opening alongside the ride. Pixel Prism, a shop located next to Sugar Rush: Sweet Rescue, will sell merchandise inspired by the attraction. A popcorn stand called Popping Station will sit nearby, facing Tomorrowland Plaza. It replaces the Popping Pod popcorn wagon, which closed in November 2024 to make way for the new stand.
Space Mountain Earthrise and the New Tomorrowland Plaza
Disney has confirmed “Space Mountain Earthrise” as the official name of the rebuilt coaster. The ride keeps its predecessor’s concept as an indoor journey through space. Disney describes the new version as completely transformed, with a new story, new architecture, and a newly developed ride system. Guests launch from Earth at the start of the experience, then move into an immersive journey through the cosmos with light and sound effects tied to space phenomena. Ride vehicles will include an onboard audio system, a first for a Tokyo Disney Resort coaster.
Disney explained the meaning behind the new name in the press release. “Earthrise” refers to the sight of Earth rising into view from beyond the Moon’s surface, similar to a sunrise. Disney says the concept is unique to the Tokyo version among Space Mountain attractions worldwide. Coca-Cola, an official sponsor of Tokyo Disneyland, will present the attraction.
Tomorrowland Plaza sits at the center of the reimagined land, built around the idea of humanity and nature living in harmony. Disney says the plaza will feature structures inspired by natural elements like fire, water, earth, and wood. Lighting throughout the space is tied to the sun and moon. The area will transform after dark with lights and sounds. A new counter-service restaurant, Element Express, will serve snacks and drinks at the plaza.
The Full Scope of Tomorrowland’s Transformation
Disney says the investment across both attractions totals approximately 100 billion Japanese yen. Both projects trace back to 2022, when Oriental Land Company first announced plans to close the existing Space Mountain and Astro Blasters for a reimagined Tomorrowland.
Sugar Rush: Sweet Rescue carries a confirmed spring 2027 opening date. Space Mountain Earthrise, Tomorrowland Plaza, and their surrounding facilities are set for a 2027 grand opening, though Disney has not specified a season yet. Additional construction updates are expected as both openings approach.
