Sugar Rush: Sweet Rescue will open at Tokyo Disneyland on Thursday, April 15th, 2027, the park’s 44th anniversary. The Wreck-It Ralph attraction replaces Buzz Lightyear’s Astro Blasters in Tomorrowland, with new music from the film’s composer, Henry Jackman. Tokyo Disney Resort is also starting the celebration early, beginning with a smartphone mini-game on January 12th. Here’s the latest.

Tokyo Disneyland has been rebuilding the heart of Tomorrowland for years, and Sugar Rush: Sweet Rescue is the first big piece to get an opening date. The ride takes over the former Astro Blasters building, and it will be the first Wreck-It Ralph attraction at any Disney theme park. That timing is fitting, since the park itself opened on April 15th, 1983.

Tokyo Disney Resort framed the opening as a fresh start for the land: “On the 44th anniversary of Tokyo Disneyland, a new ‘tomorrow’ will begin with the launch of Sugar Rush: Sweet Rescue.”

The premise matches what Tokyo Disney Resort shared when the attraction was first announced in April 2024. Now the story has more detail. King Candy wants to take over the world of video games, and he has set his sights on Sugar Rush, the candy-themed racing game. He has turned its confections, including gumdrops and ice cream, into Sugar Bugs programmed to consume the entire kingdom.

Guests join Ralph, Vanellope and their friends across a variety of scenes, restoring the Sugar Bugs to their original “kawaii” forms before they destroy the candy-filled world. Henry Jackman, who scored Wreck-It Ralph, composed and recorded new music for the attraction. That’s a big get for fans of the film.

Each ride vehicle has scanners built in, and guests work together to defend Sugar Rush from King Candy. Points come from factors like the types and number of Sugar Bugs restored. A display in each vehicle shows the results at the end of the ride.

Scores also appear in the Tokyo Disney Resort App for a limited time after the experience. Photos taken during the ride go straight to My Photos in the app, where guests can buy them through the App or the online purchase site for 30 days. Both features require guests to open the app and turn on Bluetooth before riding.

Tokyo Disney Resort notes that guests may need a free Standby Pass or paid Disney Premier Access to ride. Between the scoring, the app results and the ride photos, families have plenty of reasons to come back for a second round.

Countdown Events Begin January 12th

The celebration starts three months before the ride opens. Beginning January 12th, 2027, guests can train to help save Sugar Rush in a smartphone mini-game they can play at home. Guests can find the game on the Tokyo Disney Resort Official Website and official social media accounts. A code on the back of a special sticker, offered ahead of opening, also unlocks it.

Tomorrowland picks up attraction-inspired decorations on February 18th, giving guests a sweet backdrop for photos. Cinderella Castle joins in on March 18th with a projection-mapping program featuring imagery inspired by the ride. Here is the full countdown schedule:

  • January 12: Smartphone mini-game and special sticker
  • February 18: Sugar Rush: Sweet Rescue decorations in Tomorrowland
  • March 18: Projection mapping on Cinderella Castle

Tokyo Disney Resort says sticker distribution could change or end without notice.

Pixel Prism, Popping Station and Sugar-Lime Popcorn

Pixel Prism opens alongside the ride on April 15th, right next door. The shop will carry attraction-related items and other merchandise in a setting themed to a digital marketplace. Its design takes cues from fiber optics, with pixel-patterned flooring, game-inspired motifs, and a large pixel structure glowing at the entrance.

Popping Station opens first, on Wednesday, March 17th, 2027. The stand sits near the ride overlooking Tomorrowland Plaza, built around the idea of a popular popcorn stand in space. Its luminous blue-white design should stand out most at night. For the grand opening, Popping Station and popcorn wagons across Tokyo Disneyland will serve Sugar-Lime Popcorn, a sweet-and-tart flavor inspired by the Sugar Bugs.

Opening merchandise includes postcards of Ralph and Vanellope playing games in Sugar Rush, Sugar Bug postcards, plush of characters from the attraction, other toys and candies. Restaurants throughout the park will also offer special menu items for the opening. Tokyo Disney Resort notes that merchandise and menu items may change, sell out, or end without notice.

Story So Far

Space Mountain Earthrise and Tomorrowland Plaza will follow later in 2027. Tokyo Disney Resort has not shared opening dates for either yet.
