Tower Crane Marks New Milestone for Piston Peak National Park

A Fully Assembled Tower Crane Rises Over Piston Peak National Park
The latest photos show just how far the crane has come in a matter of weeks. Back in July, we reported that crews had only just poured the concrete foundation for the crane’s base. The blue steel section was only tall enough to see from around Frontierland at that point. These new aerial photos show a completed tower crane. Its jib now extends horizontally across a large portion of the construction site. From the ground, the mast rises well above the tree line, visible from multiple points around Magic Kingdom.
The photos also give us a clearer look at the site around the crane. Winding concrete retaining walls trace the southern perimeter of Piston Peak National Park. They follow the path of the water feature planned for the Frontierland boardwalk. Excavators, staged pipe, and portable equipment sit scattered across the muddy, semi-graded footprint. The area was once home to the Rivers of America and Tom Sawyer Island. Wider photos puts the whole site in context, including grading underway in Villains Land. The excavated site stretches from Frontierland’s boardwalk back to the northern edges of Magic Kingdom, beyond Big Thunder Mountain Railroad.
What the Tower Crane Means for Piston Peak National Park’s Construction
A tower crane like this one typically lifts structural steel, precast concrete, and other heavy building materials into place. Its arrival suggests Imagineering is ready to start building the attraction buildings themselves. That’s a shift from the underground utility work that has defined the site for most of this year.
We’ll be watching to see which structure crews will raise first now that the crane is in place. Cars Ridge Run Rally and Miss Fritter’s Daredevil Spin Along both need buildings to support their queues, ride systems, and theming. The mountainous show scenery planned for the land will also require significant vertical construction.
