Is Something Big Debuting at Animal Kingdom This Holiday Season?

With holiday season planning well underway, we think that Walt Disney World might have a holiday season surprise at Disney’s Animal Kingdom. According to Disney, Cast Members are blocked out of Disney’s Animal Kingdom every day from December 20th through January 2nd. That makes Animal Kingdom the second-most restrictive park this holiday season, behind only Magic Kingdom. Animal Kingdom is typically the least restrictive park for Cast Members thanks to its lighter crowds and shorter operating hours. Could the rare restrictions signal that something new is coming to the park this holiday season? We think so.

Walt Disney World limits Cast Member park access every holiday season. That’s expected during the busiest weeks of the year. This year’s calendar has a twist. Animal Kingdom, usually the easiest park for Cast Members to visit, has two straight weeks of blockouts around Christmas and New Year’s.

Here’s how the updated calendar looks for each park through January 2nd. These dates apply to Cast Member self-admission and trickle down to the Main Entrance Pass, which Cast Members use to bring friends and family.

  • Magic Kingdom: November 10, 11, 23, 26, December 18-31, January 1-2
  • Disney’s Animal Kingdom: December 20-31, January 1-2
  • EPCOT: December 8, 9, 13, 14, 22, 23, 31
  • Disney’s Hollywood Studios: December 28-30

Magic Kingdom has 20 blocked dates, which is no surprise with anticipated heavy holiday crowds. Animal Kingdom follows with 14 straight days. EPCOT has seven blocked dates scattered through December, even with the Festival of the Holidays and Candlelight Processional drawing crowds. Hollywood Studios has just three blocked-out dates.

It is common to see some Cast Member blockouts during the busiest time of year. What stands out to me is that Disney blocked out Animal Kingdom every single day from December 20th through January 2nd. That nearly matches Magic Kingdom’s holiday stretch day for day. Why would Disney do this? We think something big is about to be announced.

Why Cast Member Blockouts Matter

Walt Disney World typically blocks Cast Members from the parks when it expects very high crowds, like major holidays. New offerings can trigger blockouts too. That’s the angle that is interesting to us. For example, when Tiana’s Bayou Adventure debuted, Disney blocked Cast Members out of Magic Kingdom during part of the Cast Member preview period and after the opening.

We saw the same pattern in 2025 with the Disney Starlight nighttime parade. Disney kept Cast Members blocked out of Magic Kingdom, and Magic Kingdom alone, through July 19th. That was well past the crowds of the July 4th holiday and before Disney had announced a debut date. Once the parade debuted and crowds were managed, Disney lifted those Magic Kingdom blockouts.

For Disney to block Cast Members this heavily at Animal Kingdom, the “something new” would have to be a big deal. Animal Kingdom’s Cast blockout calendar this year could end up being quite the canary in the coal mine. Walt Disney World has not responded to requests for comment.

What Could Be Debuting at Animal Kingdom?

The most active construction at Animal Kingdom right now is Tropical Americas. Replacing DinoLand USA, the land will add an Encanto attraction, an Indiana Jones attraction, and a carousel. Disney World is still targeting a 2027 opening for the land. From the outside looking in, it seems impossible that any part of Tropical Americas would be ready to open or even preview by mid-December of this year. In my mind, that’s out.

Disney has already announced one new holiday offering for the park. Santa’s Holiday Grove debuts this season across from “Finding Nemo: The Big Blue… and Beyond!” with a snowy trail that leads to Santa. It’s a fun addition, but Santa alone would not lead to a Cast Member blockout. That’s out.

Another extremely slim possibility would be the debut of a new Yeti inside Expedition Everest. Disney announced at D23 in August that it is bringing the Yeti back to life and has described the work as a repair. Former Imagineer Joe Rohde later said Disney would build a new figure, which opened the door to the possibility of a “quick” swap. Could a new Yeti debut this December? I think the chances of that are slim to none, but maybe I’ll be proven wrong in short order.

A closing date for Expedition Everest is another option. I would imagine that a quick swap of the Yeti isn’t really possible. If that’s the case, it would mean that Expedition Everest would need to close for some period of time to accommodate the work. It seems highly unlikely that Disney would have an appetite to close Expedition Everest during the busy holiday season. While Animal Kingdom is struggling due to a lack of rides, a closure of a single ride at this point likely wouldn’t trigger a park-wide blockout.

Perhaps Disney announces that the ride will close in the new year, though. If so, it may not want Cast Members flooding the ride for a last ride during the holidays. That could be more likely. When Disney announced the Yeti fix, we guessed that Everest wouldn’t close until Tropical Americas was up and running. A closure in early 2027 would be a surprise given how much Animal Kingdom needs to have attractions online to be able to handle crowds, even lower crowds than the other three parks. That said, an early 2027 closure would likely allow for Expedition Everest to be open by the time Tropical Americas opens. Maybe Disney wants a headline attraction open to soak up some crowds when the new rides debut. Perhaps Disney just wants to suck it up and close Expedition Everest in early 2027 following the holiday crowds to get it back online for the Summer.

Tree of Life with drones during a special media event

Disney could also have new entertainment up its sleeve that it hasn’t announced yet. Fans have long held out hope for a new show, perhaps with drones, in the Discovery River Amphitheater. The amphitheater is the former home of Rivers of Light and KiteTails, which flew there from October 2021 through September 2022. Disney removed the custom-built KiteTails docks in early 2025. Could a drone element join the Tree of Life Awakenings Holiday Edition during Christmas week and into the New Year?

Anything less than a brand new, full show on the river likely wouldn’t trigger blockouts. I would also say it’s unlikely that a new show is in the plans for the holiday season. That brings us back to Expedition Everest and a possible early 2027 closure.

Whatever it is (or isn’t), it is very notable that Animal Kingdom has such restrictive park access for Cast Members this holiday season. It’s something that we’re keeping an eye on. We’ll let you know if we learn anything or if the restrictions change.
