Permanent Shade Structure Added to Slinky Dog Dash Queue in Toy Story Land

It’s been written about endlessly at this point, but Toy Story Land needs some shade. Disney has been using umbrellas throughout the land from opening day as a means to keep guests cool in the hot summer months and beyond, but something more permanent was clearly needed. With sections of the Slinky Dog Dash queue difficult or impossible to shade with simple umbrellas, Disney has recently installed a permanent shade structure. We made it out to Toy Story Land yesterday afternoon to see how much shade this structure provides and see if Disney has plans to expand it.

Oddly enough, the structure was installed in a section of the queue that is considered an “overflow” area. Its essentially an expandable, secondary set of switchbacks that can be used when the regular queue space fills up. Here are a few photos of the shade structure as seen yesterday afternoon. As you can see below, this section of the queue was roped off and not in use with a posted 40 minute wait.

As you can see in this final image, the structure doesn’t appear to be finished. We were told that there are plans to continue covering exterior, uncovered portions of the queue. As you can see in the photos above, the roof has holes in it, so this isn’t a move to shelter guests from the afternoon rainstorms, just purely as a means of relief from the sun.
