In a press conference today, California Governor Gavin Newsom was asked about his reaction to the news that Disney Executive Chairman Bob Iger quit California’s Economic Recovery Task Force. Newsom did not ignore the question this time, and actually pulled back the curtain a bit on the state’s thinking as it relates to theme parks.
I had a wonderful conversation with Bob [Iger] who has been vary active and participatory in our task force, and I’m incredibly grateful for his support, insight, and council over the period of the past number of months. [His quitting] didn’t come as a surprise to me at all.
There’s disagreements in terms of opening a major theme park. We’re going to let science and data make that determination. I understand the friction and frustration that many business leaders have. That they want to move forward to reopen, but we’re going to be led by a health-first framework and we’re going to be stubborn about it.
We feel like there’s no hurry putting out guidelines. We’re continuing to work with amusement parks…it’s very complex.
We don’t anticipate in the immediate term any of these larger theme parks reopening until we see more stability in terms of the data.
The statement is at odds with earlier statements from Newsom that teased a Disneyland reopening announcement “very, very shortly“.

Omg I hate this over controlling tyrant! He’s not king Newsom! Why doesn’t disney just open! What science driven guidelines? If this clown was following the science California would be wide open! But following these dumb guidelines he’s sure to drive California into the ground! What’s left of it ! Vote this pos out!

Deeply worried by comments rejecting the reality of our current pandemic setting the tone exclusively here. I won’t bother drafting a detailed rebuttal for a Disney fansite, but I’m glad to see Newsom prioritizing the safety of people, and encourage people to direct their ire regarding financial devastation to the presently idle federal government that is doing so little to support people during this crisis.
