Tom Sawyer Island and the Liberty Square Riverboat are closed at Magic Kingdom until 2021 as Disney prepares to drain the Rivers of America as part of a refurbishment project. As we first reported, the Rivers of America will be drained during this refurbishment to clean up the riverbed a bit. Reports from Riverboat pilots say that they can feel the bottom of the river getting a bit cluttered and a cleaning is well needed. The draining will be similar to what Disney did back in 2018 when they cleaned up a section of the riverbed, but not the whole thing.
While signs have popped up indicating work is incoming, there really isn’t anything to report with the exception of a slightly lowered water level. We imagine this might be a confusing time for the average guest to see signs apologizing for work that isn’t even visible yet. Here’s a look around.
Tom Sawyer Island and the Liberty Square Riverboat also have refurbishment signs.
Since we’re here, we might as well take a look at some before/after photos of the water level, which may just be a byproduct of removing all of the vessels from the river. Certainly there is some math that could determine if that theory is true. Instead, here are some photos.
