Official Disney Genie Announcement Continues Astonishing Plummet, 90% Disliked on YouTube

A couple of days ago, we posted an article noting how much negative feedback the Disney Genie announcement had gained on the official Disney Parks YouTube channel. Unlike other social media platforms, YouTube offers some insight into how disliked a particular video is. With no visible downvote metrics on Tweets or Facebook posts, YouTube gives us an exact idea of how disliked something is.

In the 24 hours that followed the announcement, the three Disney Genie videos that Disney uploaded to their official YouTube channel garnered about 70% dislikes. Now, the negative sentiment has grown to an astonishing 90% disliked based on metrics collected by BlogMickey.com today.

Not only is there a 90% negative sentiment surrounding the announcement, but two of the three videos now have the most raw number of dislikes of any YouTube video ever uploaded by the Disney Parks channel. As a matter of fact, the “Full Overview” video now has more than 10,000 dislikes, almost double the number of dislikes from the next closest non-Genie video. The “Digital Overview” now has more than 6,700 dislikes – more than 1,000 more dislikes than the next closest video.

As of publish time, here’s the continued plummet that each of the videos has experienced since we last checked in, by video title:

    • Digital Overview: Drop from 72% disliked to 90% disliked
    • Full Overview: Drop from 70% disliked to 89% disliked
    • Coming This Fall: Drop from 67% disliked to 87% disliked

The message from Disney fans is clear – they do not like Disney Genie, Disney Genie+, and Lightning Lane paid services. That said, Disney leadership such as Disney Parks Chairman Josh D’Amaro are bullish on the benefits that Disney Genie will bring to guests. Yes, there are aspects of the offering that certainly will cater to those willing to reach into their wallets and pay extra, but D’Amaro calls the planning features of the offering “game changing” and calls the paid portions of the app “the ultimate in flexibility”.

    1. Glad I’m not the only one that doesn’t approve of the new Genie app. But nothing will change until us Disney fans put a stop to this and quit going to the parks.

    2. It’s not too often I comment on Disney business models, however, the introduction of the Genie concept is one of greed. As a DVC member since 2001, and having to pay annual dues of $3,550.23, its tough for me to grasp WHY? One of the primary reasons for joining DVC was many of the perks, specifically, the gold annual pass – NO LONGER AVAILABLE, Tables in Wonderland, again, NO LONGER AVAILABLE and early access to special events, again, NO LONGER AVAILABLE. My wife and I have planned 3 trips, September, December and March 2022. We have already spent over $2000 in tickets and we haven’t even left home yet. Now if we don’t want to wait in lines, you are asking us to pay for head of the line privilege? Seriously? When my wife heard of Genie, her first words, it’s time to drop Disney and sell DVC…frankly, I have to agree. I see the Disney 50th anniversary and other commercials and wonder, really? It’s very hard to grasp that magical feeling…

    3. I’m a social media consultant and to say YouTube likes/dislikes mean nothing shows you have to learn, Mike. Even if they had no impact on any algorithm, a business of any size needs to pay attention to public sentiment. YouTube like and dislikes are one way to get a handle on feedback.
