New ‘Luminous’ Barges Arrive at EPCOT with Subtle Reflection of Earth Pattern

Four of the six planned barges for the upcoming Luminous show are staged on World Showcase Lagoon today at EPCOT, marking the largest number of barges we’ve seen out on the Lagoon at one time. Before we get into the construction, here’s a quick overview of the show.

Luminous: The Symphony of Us – Starting December 5, 2023

Feast your eyes on an all-new nighttime spectacular as it lights up the sky over World Showcase Lagoon.

A Sparkling Spectacle

Delight in a dramatic show designed to bring us all together. Marvel at a dazzling pageant of fireworks, fountains, music and lights set to an original composition. New music, along with evocative selections from the Disney songbook, come together to remind us that we are more alike than we are different.

Turning our attention back to our visit to EPCOT today, we’ll take a lap around World Showcase as we take a look at the four docked barges in the middle of the Lagoon.

As we move around World Showcase counter-clockwise, we can see that the barge facing the United Kingdom pavilion has a blue tarp on it, likely to hide the guts of the barge.

Here’s a closer look at the side view of the barge and all of the “guts” of the necessary infrastructure to make the show come alive.

From The American Adventure, we can see the four barges docked in the middle of the Lagoon and Spaceship Earth off in the distance. Remember, there will be six barges in total for the show. We understand that the barges will not be permanently moored in the Lagoon like the Harmonious infrastructure was. Instead, the barges will be piloted out to the Lagoon in the afternoons and early evenings as crews prepare for the show. For a more detailed look at what the infrastructure will look like when deployed in show mode, check out our earlier article.

Here’s a closer look at the tarp. We can see that the tarps reflect the pattern of Earth! In this tarp, we can quite clearly see North America and the northern part of South America. While we don’t expect to see these barges out all day, it is a nice touch to include some theming. Who knows, the pattern could even be a nod to the globe that used to be part of the Illuminations show for years and years in the same location.
