For the first time in the history of the Disney Genie+ service, Disney has sold out of the “multiple parks” purchase option. Typically, we see at least one theme park sell out first and take the “multiple parks” purchase option off the table as a result of one or more theme parks being sold out. However, Disney World is trying something new today, taking the multiple parks option off the board first, but keeping individual park purchases available for now.
The change in procedure welcomes speculation, so speculate we shall. First, it’s possible that Disney has received a fair amount of complaints from people who have purchased the multiple parks option this week as it relates to availability after 2pm. With the parks packed, the Genie+ service has been utilized by more guests than normal, and it’s possible that guests who purchased the multiple parks option the past few days have found it useless when they end up park hopping due to the high utilization of guests who are already in the park.
Another, less likely option, is that this is tipping Disney’s hand that they plan on restricting the ability to park hop wholesale today. Magic Kingdom will be a popular destination for many today due to the park’s celebration of New Year’s Eve Eve – the only park that celebrates two days in a row. I think this is less likely due to the fact that Disney World did sell the multiple parks option earlier today before ending sales shortly after 9am.
A third option is that this is a glitch. Not uncommon for the My Disney Experience app, but untimely given how busy the parks are right now and the number of people relying on the app to have a normal day at the parks.
