Nearly 3 years after it closed permanently to guests, Disney World is finally getting around to removing theming on the exterior of the failed NBA Experience at Disney Springs. The NBA Experience was open for just over two years, but with Disney World shutting down for COVID-19 in March 2020, the NBA Experience was effectively open for a disappointing 7 months.
While visiting Disney Springs, we noticed that Disney World had begun de-theming the exterior of the building, removing decorative steel around the roof line that contained poses of basketball players. Work has begun on the east side of the structure, with crews removing sections in the overnight hours. Here’s a look!
Disney has not announced plans for the future of the space, but they did file permits for demolition earlier this year. It’s likely that any demolition would be limited to just the NBA Experience portion of the building. CityWorks is still open in a lower quadrant of the building, and will likely remain open for some time.

Sad. But I’m afraid that the NBA is kind of a niche sport now. A few die hard fans watch them, but the ratings are way down. I suppose it makes sense to try for something a bit more centrist.
