A new permit filed by Disney shows that there is some movement at the former NBA Experience building in Disney Springs. The permit lists the work to be done as “General construction/demo” and lists the contractor as Adena. In the past, Adena has done work for Disney such as the installation of attractions in Toy Story Land and Guardians of the Galaxy: Cosmic Rewind. More recently, Adena has done work at EPCOT for the transformation of World Celebration and Journey of Water – Inspired by Moana.
As for the work at the NBA Experience, there are a few things this permit could point to, but there are no definitive hints. It’s almost guaranteed that any demolition would be rather limited in scope as the CityWorks restaurant shares the same building. If Disney wanted to bring a new tenant into the space, they would likely need to do some amount of modifications to improve and change the custom-built NBA Experience interior.
Disney previously filed permits for “structural steel upgrades” back in 2021, but there was no visible work during that time.
The NBA Experience was open for little more than 200 days before COVID-19 shut down the entire Walt Disney World Resort. Disney either couldn’t or wouldn’t come up with a reopening plan for the experience, and officially announced that it would remain closed on August 16, 2021.
As part of a limited-time partnership in Summer 2022, Disney teamed up with MetaQuest to bring the VR headset to the former NBA Experience building to promote the Star Wars: Tales from the Galaxy’s Edge experience. The offering was open from May to July and nothing has been done with the space since then besides using the former gift shop as an office space.
