An all-new Villains-themed stage show is coming to the Sunset Showcase building at Disney’s Hollywood Studios this Summer. If you’re not familiar with the “Sunset Showcase” name, just know that this building was the former home of the Lightning McQueen’s Racing Academy before it closed permanently last October. While work inside the theater has been ongoing for some time, we’re getting our first look at visible construction progress thanks to some recent work on the exterior of the venue. Here’s a look!
First Visible Work for All-New Villains Show at Hollywood Studios
Technically, the first signs of construction were some 10 days ago when we first spotted a scrim hiding views into the Sunset Showcase courtyard from the Rock ‘n’ Roller Coaster outdoor queue. We’ll start with a look at that.
More recently, we stopped by Hollywood Studios to find that Disney was beginning to dismantle the outdoor photo ops of Cruz Ramirez and DJ. We’ll start with a look back at the photo ops as they stood when Lightning McQueen’s Racing Academy was open.
And here’s a look at the area from our recent visit to Disney’s Hollywood Studios. Both Cruz and DJ have been removed, and the structures have been stripped of (most) theming.
The wait time sign has also been stripped of theming. Here’s a before/after of the area.
Finally, the Lighting McQueen’s Racing Academy sign was still present when we visited, but I can’t imagine that it sticks around much longer.
