While visiting Disney’s Hollywood Studios this morning, not only did we check in on the all-new Little Mermaid show marquee and some new theming in Animation Courtyard, but we also made it over to Sunset Showcase to find a giant new mural being painted for the all-new Villains-themed show. Not only is work underway on the mural, but the outdoor queue has been greatly expanded for a show that is expected to be quite popular this summer at Hollywood Studios. Let’s take a closer look.
Villains Unfairly Ever After Mural at Sunset Showcase
The new mural looks to employ the same broken glass effect that has been common with marketing for the new show that debuts May 27th at Hollywood Studios. Work began earlier this week, and we spotted crews painting the face of the Sunset Showcase during our visit to the park earlier today.
In addition to the mural, it looks like Disney has basically tripled the size of the outdoor queue that was present for the former show in this theater – Lightning McQueen’s Racing Academy. The queue now extends into the courtyard, and it will likely hold 2-3 show’s worth of guests in it.
We’ll begin our look at the work by providing some context for not only where the Sunset Showcase building is, but also the visual impact that the mural will have on Rock ‘n’ Roller Coaster entry area. Of course, it’s not like this area is highly themed anyway, so a giant purple/pink mural isn’t going to break some sort of highly immersive environment – it’s just interesting to see what it looks like.
A peek just over the shrubs shows a queue/corral area that has been expanded. We can see that the queue entrance area will now be near that palm tree. With Lightning McQueen’s Racing Academy, the queue was closer to where the red umbrellas are.
Here’s a look at the mural work in progress, with crews applying some paint this morning. It looks like tape is outlining where some broken glass-style effects will be applied in the coming days.
Finally, it looks like there is a new shape/theme being worked on for a nearby backstage gate.
