Walt Disney World has announced new details for the Cars-themed expansion of Frontierland at Magic Kingdom. In order to support the construction of the new space, Tom Sawyer Island and the Rivers of America will be closed starting July 7th. Their final day of operation will be July 6th. An additional impact will be the temporary closure of the Frontierland Railroad Station. Here’s the latest.
Walt Disney World Railroad Modified Route During Cars & Villains Land Construction
Starting July 7th, the Walt Disney World Railroad will begin modified operations to support the construction of the Cars-themed expansion of Frontierland and the upcoming Villains Land. Both areas will be constructed in the Northwest corner of Magic Kingdom, which contains the Walt Disney World Railroad route. While permits say that the railroad tracks themselves will be preserved, the railroad will not be able to traverse this section of track during the work.
To make way for the largest expansion in history at Magic Kingdom, the Walt Disney World Railroad will be operating under a modified route that excludes Frontierland station beginning July 7. The attraction will operate as a shuttle between Main Street station and Fantasyland station only.
Walt Disney World will operate the Railroad in “shuttle mode”, simply going between the Main Street station and the Fantasyland station. While Walt Disney World has not announced an end date for this style of modified operation, it is likely to take years.
Disney has not announced an opening date (or year) for the newly announced Piston Peak National Park section of Frontierland, and I’m not sure that the Railroad would be able to resume normal operations then. It is likely that the Railroad won’t be able to resume normal operations until Villains Land either opens or is substantially complete, which will be years into the future.
Walt Disney World has not announced an end timeframe for the “shuttle mode” operations.
