New Trademark Application Could Confirm Monsters Inc. Land Name at Hollywood Studios

|

A newly filed trademark application by Disney could hint at the official land name for the upcoming Monsters Inc.-themed land coming to Disney’s Hollywood Studios. During the initial announcement of the new land back in 2024, Disney referred to it as “Monsters, Inc. Land”. In another press release at the time, Disney called it a “Monsters-inspired area”. In a January 2025 update, Disney still referred to the land as the “world of Monsters, Inc”. However, there was a subtle shift in messaging back in March 2025 that has seemingly been solidified by a new Imagineering display and a recent trademark application. Here’s the latest.

Welcome to Monstropolis, the Monsters Inc. Land at Hollywood Studios

Back in March 2025, the Disney Parks Blog seemed to offer a name for the new Monsters Inc.-themed land. As you can see below, Disney began referring to the new land as Monstropolis. Fans of the Monsters Inc. franchise will know that Monstropolis is the name of the city where the main characters live and work in the movies.

Taking to the stage during The Future of World-Building at Disney panel at SXSW, Pixar Chief Creative Officer Pete Docter and Imagineer Michael Hundgen walked the crowd through their latest upcoming immersive space to occupy Disney’s Hollywood Studios: Monstropolis.

First announced at last year’s D23: The Ultimate Disney Fan Event, Imagineers are hard at work bringing the world of Pixar Animation Studios’ Monsters, Inc. to life — and that includes its monster inhabitants, James P. Sullivan, Mike Wazowski, and more. While getting to walk through the streets of Monstropolis is exciting enough, the land will include a signature attraction where guests embark on a thrilling roller coaster ride through the Monsters, Inc. door vault.

Backing up a bit, there was an initial discrepancy over the new land’s name. As discussed above, Disney initially did not refer to the new area as Monstropolis. In the text of press release’s Disney called the area the Monsters Inc. Land or the world of Monsters, Inc., etc. However, the metadata of the concept art at the time did name the land Monstropolis. Here’s a look at the differences in descriptions:

Picking up after the events of Pixar’s beloved film, humans have now been invited to visit the world of Monsters, Inc. — and the monsters need laughter to power the city and keep it running smoothly.

Disney Parks fans may remember a similar incident in 2017 when the official name of the upcoming Star Wars Land was “leaked” via alt text on the Disney Parks Blog website. It was a big deal at the time, coming shortly before Disney made the official announcement.

The Monstropolis name in the concept art metadata didn’t receive nearly as much fanfare, going unnoticed. Well, when you combine that info with two recent developments, I think we can all but confirm that Monstropolis will be the name of the new land. Here are the more recent developments.

This past Friday (Oct. 10th), Walt Disney Imagineering debuted a new preview display in the Walt Disney Presents attraction at Disney’s Hollywood Studios. The new display refers to the Monsters Inc. Land by the Monstropolis name in multiple spots, including the concept art wall and in a nearby text description.

After years spent scaring us, monsters are finally welcoming humans into Monstropolis with an all-new themed land inspired by the beloved Monsters, Inc. film franchise. Coming to Disney’s Hollywood Studios, the land will feature shopping, dining and the first-ever suspended coaster in a Disney park. As in the film, guests will first be hoisted into the air — via a unique vertical-lift system – before zooming off on a thrilling ride through the iconic Door Vault.

On the same day that the new Imagineering preview debuted, Walt Disney Parks & Resorts filed a trademark application for “Monstropolis”, citing a wide variety of use cases, including “Amusement park and theme park services” and “Entertainment services in the nature of an amusement park show”.

When you add up all of the data points, I think it’s clear that Disney is going to officially name the new Monsters Inc.-themed land Monstropolis at Disney’s Hollywood Studios. Given the fact that there will be a number of iconic locations from the Monstropolis that guests know from the movie, giving the theme park land the same name seems like a no-brainer.
