Walt Disney World Resort celebrated World War II hero Herb Maneloveg on his 101st birthday during a special Flag Retreat ceremony at Magic Kingdom Park on January 25. Herb served as a Private in the U.S. Armyโ€™s 106th Infantry Division during the Battle of the Bulge, where he was wounded and later received the Purple Heart for injuries sustained there.

Herbโ€™s 101st birthday celebration began with a journey down Main Street U.S.A. and seeing Cinderella Castle with his family. They then enjoyed a special viewing of the legendary Festival of Fantasy Parade, where they got to see beloved Disney characters including Mickey Mouse and Minnie Mouse.

โ€œItโ€™s a wish that is better than any wish Iโ€™ve ever had,โ€ said Herb, after watching the Festival of Fantasy Parade. โ€œTo me, the important thing is family and they are here. Itโ€™s all I could ask for.โ€

โ€œMy father is a great guy, he was a serviceman, but he was also a great father, husband, and grandfather,โ€ said Herbertโ€™s daughter, Susan. โ€œThanks to Disney and how they honored him. The parade was great, he got attention from everybody, which was so sweet.โ€

As the American Flag retires every day in Magic Kingdom, itโ€™s always a patriotic and reflective moment. It carries an even deeper meaning when we pay tribute to the courage and sacrifices of veterans like Herb.

Our admiration for military veterans, service members, and their families carries on a legacy that began with Walt and Roy O. Disney, who both served their country during World War I.

Since 1955 at Disneyland and 1971 at Magic Kingdom, daily flag ceremonies have honored U.S. veterans and service members. Each day, a guest is chosen from among the parkโ€™s daily visitors. at Magic Kingdom to serve as โ€œU.S. Armed Forces Representative of the Dayโ€ during the sunset ceremony.
