New aerial photos from Bioreconstruct show major progress at the Monsters Inc. Door Vault roller coaster construction site at Disney’s Hollywood Studios. Steel structures are now rising, marking a significant milestone for the upcoming attraction.

New Structures Rise for Monsters Inc. Door Vault Roller Coaster

Back in early April, we broke the news that roller coaster support columns were installed. The photos we posted were from the guest parking lot, more than a half mile away from the construction. Views from the Cast Member parking lot are better, for sure, but the Cast Member parking lot is for, well, Cast Members. A couple of days later, Bioreconstruct took to the skies over Disney’s Hollywood Studios to get a better look at the construction site.

Before diving into the newest photos, here’s a look at concept art for the attraction’s interior and exterior. A model of the ride was also shown at the 2024 D23 Expo, which helps give a sense of the final scale and layout.

Now, Bioreconstruct is back with new aerial photos of the Monstropolis construction site. Two steel structures are now going up near what appears to be either the end of the load station or the start of the ride itself. In the photo below, the sandy area is likely where the queue will be, while the concrete block structures with scaffolding and wood are likely the load station area. Beyond that, vertical support columns for the suspended roller coaster continue to be installed. Take a closer look!

Monstropolis at Disney’s Hollywood Studios: What You Need to Know

Disney’s Hollywood Studios is getting a brand-new land. The former Muppets Courtyard, along with a section outside the park’s existing footprint, is being transformed into Monstropolis, a new area inspired by Pixar’s Monsters, Inc. franchise.

The land was first announced at the Disney Experiences Showcase during D23: The Ultimate Disney Fan Event. Then-Disney Experiences Chairman Josh D’Amaro revealed the plans alongside Disney Legend Billy Crystal.

Monstropolis is the city where James P. Sullivan and Mike Wazowski live and work in the films. In this new land, the story picks up after the events of the original movie. Humans are now welcome to visit, and the monsters need laughter, not screams, to power their city.

Monsters Inc. Door Vault Coaster: What Makes It Unique

The Monsters Inc. Door Vault roller coaster will be the centerpiece of Monstropolis. It is set to be one of the most technically ambitious attractions Walt Disney World has ever built. Here’s what makes it stand out:

  • The largest attraction building at Disney’s Hollywood Studios, surpassing Rise of the Resistance, Avatar Flight of Passage, and TRON Lightcycle Run. Only the Guardians of the Galaxy: Cosmic Rewind complex at EPCOT is bigger.
  • First-ever suspended coaster at a Disney Park, meaning guests will ride with their feet dangling below them as the roller coaster track runs above them.
  • First-ever vertical lift at a Disney Park, which will hoist guests into the air to mimic the iconic door vault scene from the film.

The ride is described as a family-friendly experience. Guests will sit in a suspended position and travel through massive cavernous spaces themed to the door vault from Monsters, Inc.

Construction is moving quickly. The ride building alone signals how big this addition will be. The foundation has been poured, support columns are in place, and now vertical steel structures are beginning to take shape above ground.
