Cars Ridge Run Rally Off-Road Attraction Designed to Operate in the Rain

During a Walt Disney Imagineering discussion about Piston Peak National Park, Imagineer Jason Grandt addressed concerns about rain. He said that fans had asked whether Cars Ridge Run Rally would need to shut down during wet weather. Grandt said no; the attraction is designed to operate in the rain. Of course, it will still follow standard lightning safety rules, since it’s an outdoor ride.

Cars Ridge Run Rally Can Operate in the Rain at Magic Kingdom

  • Imagineer Jason Grandt confirmed Cars Ridge Run Rally is designed to operate in the rain
  • The attraction’s geyser field already sends water through the course during normal operation
  • Standard lightning safety protocols will still apply since the ride is outdoors

The Geyser Field as a Water Test

Grandt raised the topic while discussing one of the attraction’s final scenes. He was talking about a piece of concept art showing tire track geyser pools along the route. Grandt said the geyser field adds another layer of activity to the nearby Big Thunder Mountain Railroad and Tiana’s Bayou Adventure. Geysers erupt like a fountain show as ride vehicles race past.

That constant water exposure is why Grandt feels confident about rain. “This ride is being designed to operate in the rain,” he said. He framed the geyser field as a built-in test of sorts. If the vehicles can handle that much water on a normal lap, he suggested, an afternoon shower won’t be a problem.

The geyser field sits near the end of the route. Racers climb toward Piston Peak’s snow-covered summit, then descend through a series of dips before reaching the geysers. From there, the course loops back for a sprint to the finish line, where Lightning McQueen and Mater call the race.

New Ride Vehicle Technology

Disney has said the ride vehicles are all-new, too. The system does not simulate an off-road vehicle. It is an off-road vehicle. Tires and suspension physically react to the terrain instead of relying on a programmed effect.

Lightning remains the one weather condition that will pause Cars Ridge Run Rally, same as any other outdoor attraction at Magic Kingdom. Rain by itself will not.
