Olaf Draws To Use In-Person Virtual Queue to Manage Crowds During Busy Times

Olaf Draws! opened today as part of a soft opening for The Magic of Disney Animation at Disney’s Hollywood Studios. As word gets out and crowds continue to build, Disney has confirmed the experience will use an in-person virtual waitlist as needed to manage crowds during busy periods. Guests who join the waitlist can explore the rest of the experience while they wait for their turn at the desk, rather than standing in a physical line. Here’s the latest.

Olaf Draws! Virtual Queue Details

IN THIS ARTICLE:

  • Disney confirmed a virtual waitlist for Olaf Draws! during busy periods
  • Guests receive a text message return time instead of waiting in a physical line
  • Sign-up happens in person at the attraction with a cast member

How the Virtual Waitlist Works

Disney will use the virtual waitlist as needed at Olaf Draws!, rather than running it at all times. Guests who join will receive a return time by text message, freeing them up to continue enjoying other attractions, entertainment, and dining throughout Hollywood Studios before coming back for their session. This mirrors the same basic idea behind virtual queues used elsewhere at Walt Disney World. Guests aren’t stuck standing in a physical line while they wait. And there isn’t a lot of queue area to wait in, either.

Cast members handle sign-up in person rather than through the My Disney Experience app. Guests visit the attraction directly and check in with a cast member to be added to the list, if needed.

Why Olaf Draws! Needs Crowd Management

Olaf Draws! replaced the traditional Animation Academy format with an all-new Audio-Animatronics figure of Olaf, seated at an animator’s desk. Guests learn character drawing techniques through recorded lessons from Disney Animation artists, with each session running about 10 minutes. The experience has already generated strong buzz as a signature piece of The Magic of Disney Animation.

A virtual waitlist gives Disney a tool to manage that demand without the queue growing too large. It’s a similar approach to how Disney has handled other popular, limited-capacity experiences, prioritizing guest flow over a traditional queue when interest outpaces the space available inside the attraction. The difference here is that this isn’t a virtual queue that guests sign up for through the app. Instead, the waitlist is deployed, as needed, and guests join it by physically going up to a Cast Member at the attraction.
