Are Changes Coming to Tower of Terror? Original Voice Actor Visits Imagineering

Mark Silverman, the voice of Rod Serling at Tower of Terror, hinted at new Disney work after visiting Walt Disney Imagineering last week. When asked on his post about the visit whether fans would hear something new, Silverman answered, “well… could be.” That answer could point to show changes or updates inside the attraction at Disney’s Hollywood Studios. Disney has not announced any, though crews are already refreshing the Hollywood Tower Hotel facade.

Tower of Terror Voice Actor Hints at Something New at Disney

  • Mark Silverman, the voice of Rod Serling at Tower of Terror, hinted at new Disney work in a post about an Imagineering visit
  • New narration could signal show changes or updates inside the attraction, though Disney has not announced any
  • A separate exterior refresh of the Hollywood Tower Hotel facade continues while the ride stays open

For more than three decades, Mark Silverman has given Rod Serling a voice inside the Hollywood Tower Hotel. A trip to Imagineering last week and a short, playful answer have Tower of Terror fans wondering what comes next. Disney hasn’t said what brought Silverman into WDI campus, or whether the visit involves the attraction at all.

The exact question put to him on his post was, “Are we getting to hear something new from you at Disney?!” Silverman answered, “”well… could be.” Silverman didn’t name a project, a park, or a timeline in his reply. Still, the most famous role on his resume sits at the end of Sunset Boulevard, so Tower of Terror is the natural place for fans to look first.

Serling hosts the experience from start to finish. He welcomes guests from the library television during the pre-show, then speaks again inside the elevator before the doors open onto the fifth dimension. New recordings from Silverman could mean updated dialogue for one of those moments, or even new show scenes. Of course, this all still falls firmly within the just the first dimension of speculation at this point.

Disney Has Been Investing in the Hollywood Tower Hotel

The attraction has seen plenty of care over the past few years. When we rode on its 30th anniversary in July 2024, we found restored lightning scorch marks at the lobby elevators. Longtime Cast Members told us crews had painted over that detail some 20 years earlier. Crews also brought back mood lighting in the lobby and the hallway past the library.

This summer, scaffolding climbed the southeast side of the building. By August, it had spread to the front of the tower below the Hollywood Tower Hotel sign. Earlier this month, we got our first look at the refreshed exterior, with scenic painters re-aging the pink stucco, teal shutters, and rust streaks by hand. Scaffolding still wraps the upper levels and face of the structure. Tower of Terror has stayed open throughout the work.

So far, all of this year’s visible work has focused on the facade. Silverman’s post raises the possibility of show changes inside the hotel as well. Fresh narration from the original voice of Rod Serling would fit right in with the care Disney has already shown this attraction.

Mark Silverman’s Long History as Rod Serling

Rod Serling died in 1975, nearly two decades before Tower of Terror opened on July 22nd, 1994. Imagineers paired archival footage of the Twilight Zone creator with new narration, and Silverman won the role with the approval of Serling’s widow, Carol Serling. His voice has been part of the ride ever since.

He later recorded additional lines for the Disney California Adventure version of the attraction. Silverman has also voiced Serling outside the parks, including on the 2019 revival of The Twilight Zone, so a separate project remains possible. Whether “could be” points to the Hollywood Tower Hotel or somewhere else entirely is the question for now.
