Animal Kingdom Lodge has three new nyala calves, but they are staying out of public view for now. The trio is backstage bonding with their moms. Disney says guests may see them on the savanna soon, though it hasn’t announced a specific date.
Backstage Bonding Before the Savanna
Disney’s animal care team has a long track record with this stage. Mel, an animal keeper at the lodge, said this spring: “We’ve been welcoming new baby animals to the lodge since its opening more than 25 years ago, so our team knows exactly how to prepare them for life on the savanna.”
Ivy the Masai giraffe calf took a similar path. She spent time backstage with her mom, Willow, before she debuted on Kilimanjaro Safaris on June 11th.
What Nyala Calves Look Like
Disney says nyala calves are born with white stripes and spots that help them blend into tall grass. Male nyalas later grow a darker coat and spiral horns. Disney hasn’t shared the sexes, names, or birth dates of the three new calves.
This spring, Disney introduced a male nyala calf named Parker at the lodge. Animal Kingdom Lodge has also welcomed other young savanna residents over the years, including a baby Hartmann’s mountain zebra born in 2021 that guests could find roaming the lodge’s savanna.
