Disney World Demolishes Themed Towers at Tomorrowland in Magic Kingdom

A few weeks after we reported on a permit for demolition tied to the Tomorrowland bridge, we may finally know what the permit was referencing. While visiting Magic Kingdom this morning, we noticed that several themed towers have been demolished at the entrance of Tomorrowland. The removal appears to be tied to the ongoing Cinderella Castle repainting project and the Cinderella Castle moat refresh. Here’s the latest.

Tomorrowland Themed Towers Demolished at Magic Kingdom

  • A look back at the rocket-style tower that once stood at the entrance
  • The domed towers that have also disappeared from the entrance
  • How the removal ties into the Cinderella Castle repainting project
  • What the changes could mean for the future of the Tomorrowland entrance

THE ROCKET-STYLE TOWER

We’ll start with a look back at the themed towers, found on either side of the Tomorrowland entrance. To the right was a single rocket-style themed tower. It rose from a stone-block plinth set atop sculpted gray rockwork. The structure featured a silver, capsule-shaped finial with a domed top. It was mounted between upswept golden-yellow blades that framed it like fins. The plinth below was built from angular concrete blocks with recessed vertical channels, and textured insets ran down its faces.

And here’s a look at the area where crews have demolished the tower.

THE DOMED TOWERS

On the other side of the entrance, one of the towers seen below has also been removed. The larger tower on the left had a tall white domed cap trimmed in metal. It sat above a dusty pink band with louvered vents and a perforated metal cylinder beneath. Curved silver legs straddled the rockwork to support it. To its right stood a shorter companion tower with a white domed top, a gold mesh cylinder with a central porthole, and matching angular silver supports.

The photo below was taken back in February, right when the Tomorrowland rockwork repainting project was beginning. You can see some wraps on the legs of the towers from that earlier work.

And here’s a look at where the tower has been demolished.

WHAT THIS MEANS FOR TOMORROWLAND

We’ll have more thoughts on the soft reimagining of Tomorrowland that Disney has been undertaking over the past few years in a separate article. That said, the removal of these towers is just the latest piece of the overall puzzle.

We’re excited to see where Tomorrowland goes, and hope that the removal of these towers isn’t met with some sort of addition for the new vision of the land.
