Updated COVID-19 Model Suggests Florida Has Passed Peak and Can Relax Social Distancing June 1st

According to analysis from Healthdata.org, Florida is currently seeing encouraging trends with regards to COVID-19.

Two key indicators that the website tracks are COVID-19 related deaths and hospital resource utilization. According to the data, Florida saw a peak in deaths 16 days ago. Also of note here is the downward trend of the curve that appears to allow a relaxation of social distancing by June 1st. June 1st is also the first day that Disney is accepting new reservations for. Disney has removed theme park hours through May 9th as of publish time.

Another key metric is the strain on hospital resources. Data would suggest that we’re also seeing a downward trend in hospital resource utilization, with the peak predicted to have happened last week.

Of course, this type of data is just one piece of the “reopening puzzle” that officials are looking at to reopen the economy in stages. While there is federal guidance on what a phased reopening would look like, there are also state and local guidelines too. On Friday, Orange County Mayor Jerry Demings put together a task force on reopening the economy that included Thomas Mazloum, the Senior Vice President of Resorts and Transportation Operations at Walt Disney World.

Data would also suggest that California is past the COVID-19 peak metrics. Bob Iger is on the California task force to reopen the economy.

As of publish time, the Disney parks and resorts remain closed indefinitely. While June looks to be a possible reopening target, Disney will continue to adjust their closures in line with recommendations from local officials.

    1. Numbers are trending down because of social distancing and mandated restrictions. As soon as restrictions relax, infections will rise again, and shortly theteafter so will illnesses, hospitalizations and deaths. This is an extremely contagious illness and it is nowhere near done with us.
