Orange County California Health Agency Recommends Reopening Disneyland in “Moderate” Tier, Earlier Than Draft Guidelines from State

According to a report from the OC Register, Orange County Health officials have given the green light to Disneyland and other area theme parks to reopen when the county reaches the “moderate” tier on the Blueprint for a Safer Economy guidelines. As of publish time, Orange County is in the “substantial” tier, one away from when county health officials think it’s safe to reopen at. As a reminder, here are the tiers.

The “moderate” level would be sooner than the state of California would like according to a draft reopening plan seen by BlogMickey.com. The draft guidelines called for theme parks to reopen at the yellow “minimal” tier, which would be weeks or possibly months away. The state of California reevaluates the tiers that a county is in every week, but a county must maintain good standing in the tier for 3 weeks before being considered a candidate to move to a lower tier. Ultimately, it’s up to the state, not the county, on when Disneyland can reopen, which is why Disneyland says they’re “in limbo“.

Governor Gavin Newsom recently postponed the announcement of reopening guidelines for theme parks after theme park operators saw the guidelines and were not happy with the restrictions put in place. Newsom’s health agency said that they were headed back to the table with Disneyland and other theme park operators to come up with guidelines that are safe but understanding of the economic strains put on theme parks and area businesses as a result of more than 6 months of closures.

Walt Disney World has been open in Orlando, FL for over two months now, and local officials have yet to link a COVID-19 outbreak to the theme parks despite combing over the data to search for one. Disney World has, in our opinion, been the industry leader in safety at the theme parks, even recently issuing a ban to a guest who refused to follow the mandatory mask rules. Disney World has also implemented physical distancing throughout the parks and is limiting capacity via a theme park reservation system.

    1. I’ll say it again, Newsom has no intention of opening Disneyland or the state anytime soon. He bases it on cases so he will see to it that the cases stay high enough to not open.
