In a press conference earlier today, Orange County Mayor Jerry Demings commented on the ongoing county-wide mask mandate and when it may be lifted.
While Demings didn’t give a concrete timeline for the mask mandate to be lifted, he did give a vaccination target of 50% of the population. Demings went on to say that he believes Orange County can hit that number by June.
Mayor Demings first made masks mandatory back in June 2020 – nearly a month after Disney Springs reopened with a mask mandate already in place. While it’s encouraging to hear that Demings foresees an end to the mask mandate, that does NOT mean that Walt Disney World will be removing their mask mandate in June, or even this summer at all.
As a matter of fact, Disney CEO Bob Chapek expects to remove a face mask mandate and relax social distancing in 2022.
Disney has even mandated face coverings for guests who are already fully vaccinated. While it’s encouraging news for those who are local to the Orlando area, it’s worth remembering that Walt Disney World is an international destination, and they will likely be a little slower to lift mandates than the county would allow.
