It has been four years (1,461 days) since work began on the TRON Lightcycle Run roller coaster at Magic Kingdom. Back on Valentine’s Day 2018, we noticed that work had begun to clear roughly 8 acres of trees in a plot of land next to Space Mountain.
At the time, permits were filed for construction on the site with an estimated completion date of August 16, 2021 – just in time for Walt Disney World’s 50th Anniversary on October 1, 2021.
Of course, 2018 was a simpler time, and ambitions for the 50th Anniversary were high. Filed alongside the TRON permit was a permit for the Main Street USA Theater project that would’ve seen a broadway-style theater built near Main Street USA. That project was ultimately canceled.
TRON Lightcycle Run survived and while it will miss its originally announced summer 2021 opening by quite a bit, work continues to bring the Shanghai Disneyland clone coaster to Magic Kingdom.
