With the MagicBand+ now on sale at Walt Disney World, we’re testing everything we can about the new wearable. Billed as the next generation of the MagicBand 2, the MagicBand+ promises interactivity around the Walt Disney World Resort from bounty hunting in Star Wars: Galaxy’s Edge to fireworks on Main Street USA. It’s the latter that we’re going to take a look at in this article.
As part of our testing to determine whether or not the MagicBand+ is “worth it”, we wanted to not only spend hours chasing digital bounties in Batuu (and we have), but we also wanted to see how it performs during nighttime spectaculars. To that end, we recently visited Magic Kingdom to watch Disney Enchantment with our MagicBand+. The results were disappointing, to say the least.
In our full video below, you can see that the MagicBand+ is mostly dark during Disney Enchantment. By our stopwatch, the MagicBand+ only lights up during about 3 minutes and 40 seconds of the 16-minute show – or about 23% of the time. That means that 77% of the time the MagicBand+ is dark and does not interact with Disney Enchantment. It’s worth noting that our MagicBand+ is not defective and other MagicBand+ devices that we saw around us lit up at the same time as our band.
Here’s our full video of MagicBand+ interactions with Disney Enchantment.
It feels like the entertainment team didn’t want you looking at your wrist during their big 50th Anniversary show, while the MagicBand+ team sold the band with a promise of interactivity during the nighttime spectaculars and needed to deliver something. This is an underwhelming compromise.
Again, we’ll have a much more thorough article detailing the pros and cons of our experience with MagicBand+, but you certainly shouldn’t buy it just for the Disney Enchantment “interactivity”. This is a miss and we hope that Disney is able to enhance the MagicBand+ experience with Disney Enchantment in the not-too-distant future.
