Today’s the day! The long-awaited Hatbox Ghost has been revealed at Magic Kingdom’s Haunted Mansion attraction in Liberty Square after first being announced back in September 2022 at the D23 Expo in Anaheim. The Hatbox Ghost has joined the Mansion in the endless hallway scene, somewhat controversially before the seance scene with Madame Leota. According to Disney World, the Hatbox Ghost appears to guests as they pass the Endless Hallway, welcoming himself inside from the swinging wake in the cemetery and grinning at the Doom Buggies as they set off deeper into the mansion.
The installation of the Hatbox Ghost and the work surrounding the set behind him began on August 1st, and Disney World opted to keep the Haunted Mansion attraction open throughout the work. The location of the Hatbox Ghost could be inferred based on the scrims that were installed in a dark corner near the Endless Hallway.
In September at the Destination D23 event at Disney’s Contemporary Resort, Disney World released the following concept art, showing the Hatbox Ghost just to the left of the Endless Hallway as previously revealed by the scrims and statements from Disney. A new door was added in this space for the Hatbox Ghost. Previously, this is where the “Donald Duck” chair sat. Guests can see his trolley of hatboxes nearby and the transformation effect of his head jumping into the hatbox and back happens often enough that every guest should be able to see the impressive effect.
A late November opening date was announced for the Hatbox Ghost, and we stopped by Magic Kingdom today to find him grinning at guests as the Mansion’s newest addition! Here he is – the Hatbox Ghost!
